SPPF M.A.S.T.R. Kids’ Assistant Teacher
Job Description
The Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to “advance literacy and help close the achievement gap for students in the at-risk community of South St. Petersburg, FL.” All applicants must have passion for the mission as well as a desire to work to develop holistic solutions that create success for children and families in the community. There is also a high need for cultural sensitivity that comes with serving an at-risk population which has developed a healthy distrust of all things viewed as a part of “the system”. A majority of the families we serve are of African American descent so all staff must be comfortable working cross culturally if necessary.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
The Assistant Teacher provides assistance to the Academic Program Leader and teachers in implementing effective reading and language arts programs, including curriculum, instruction, professional development, progress monitoring, assessment, materials, classroom management, instructional technology and the evaluation/analysis of students and programs. The goal is to have each student achieve and maintain grade level reading abilities.
Instruction and Integration
The Assistant Teacher:
- Models, co-teaches using strategies for struggling readers and writers
- Assists teachers with creating classroom learning systems including a variety of techniques and materials to instruct and motivate students, meeting them where they are.
- Works with teachers to provide support and materials for students to improve reading and language arts programs as well as STEAM education.
- Provides input into the evaluation and improvement of reading and writing programs
- Provides support for articulation of English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Exceptional Student Education (ESE) guidelines, pedagogy in reading and writing programs.
- Systematically collects, analyzes, monitors results, and reports data to support decision-making in order to review and improve project action plans, timelines, processes and systems
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Use appropriate classroom management techniques.
- Apply knowledge of child growth and development.
- Confer with the Academic Program Leader, Literacy Teacher, pupil, parents, regarding the pupil’s academic and social development.
- Maintain required records.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Leadership and Professional Growth
The Assistant Teacher shall:
- Participate in professional development experiences that allow him or her to observe, evaluate, and support instruction.
- Recommend tools, resources believed to be potentially useful for moving students forward in reading/literacy capability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with students to acquire reading skills in either an “Early Learning Center” or other K-12 school environment.
- Associates or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Experience improving reading capability of students preferred.
- Familiarity with i-Ready assessment and tools preferred.
- Reading or ELA emphasis in education preferred.
- Strong references.
- Must clear DCF Background Screening

Job Types: Part-time, Contract
Pay: $19.00 per hour

- Monday to Friday
