The School of Adult Studies at Simpson University welcomes applicants for the Dean of the School of Adult Studies. The School has multiple majors and has served more than 4,000 students since its inception in 1989. Poised for growth, the SAS needs an innovative leader to respond to the demands of the market and the unique needs of non-traditional students to ensure access, engagement, and success of adults completing their bachelor’s degrees.
This is a non-tenured, non-ranked administrative faculty position that provides leadership and direction for the programs within the School of Adult Studies.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide visionary and strategic leadership regarding curriculum, programs, and best practices to serve adult learners.
- Oversee the fiscal management of the department, including identifying expenditures for future programs, staffing, and activities.
- Directly supervise department staff and numerous adjuncts teaching within the majors offered in SAS.
- Initiate hiring of new adjunct faculty as needed for the programs within SAS in coordination with the provost.
- Develop and communicate a vision for the department, unifying various stakeholders around the common vision.
- Attend and participate in various committees as assigned by the provost.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders within the campus and in the community including the local community colleges.
- Review syllabi to ensure faith integration, high academic standards, and compliance with expectations regarding appropriate clock hours for online courses
- Ensure faculty to student interaction in online courses and provide guidance on these efforts
- Collaborate with Disciplinary Leads/Program Directors in creating the courses/sequences for each major in alignment with their traditional undergraduate counterparts (where applicable).
- Create professional development opportunities for faculty teaching in SAS throughout the course of the academic year
- Partner with Admissions in the recruitment and enrollment process of adult learners.

Minimum Experience/Education
- Master’s degree required, doctorate preferred. Graduate work should be in one of the disciplines represented in the SAS, or in a field related to education, leadership, or higher education administration.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience working with online/distance education. Experience with leadership/management of online programming
- Thorough understanding of the principles and best practices of andragogy and other relevant adult learning theories.
- Experience leading staff and adjuncts
- Experience collaborating with multiple departments to launch new online program offerings.
