Description

Responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing all facets of the SIU School of
Medicine’s ThinkFirst Injury Prevention Program, ensuring a proactive Injury Prevention
Program at SIU School of Medicine. Collaborates with necessary internal and external
resources to secure funding for the program and demonstrate state-of-the-art injury prevention
and control activities locally, regionally, and nationally. Collaborates with the SIU School of
Medicine Departments, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and other regional/national
groups, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of
Neurosurgeons, to ensure that specific contracts are followed and each organization’s
objectives are met satisfactorily.

Examples of Duties

I. Administration 50%
A. Manages and coordinates all aspects of the SIU School of Medicine’s ThinkFirst
Injury Prevention Program, including, community educational programs, public
information campaigns, public policy support and collaboration with other
organizations involved in injury prevention, locally, regionally, and nationally.
B. Responsible for successful implementation of ThinkFirst, a national model Brain
and Spinal Cord Injury Prevention Program. Function as local ThinkFirst Chapter
Director in central and southern Illinois. Oversees all planning and preparation
for presentations. Coordinates all details of Think First educational programs,
including researching and selecting appropriate educational content, assembling
program materials, scheduling all programs and speakers, follow up with all
current and potential schools and organization.
C. Fosters relationships with multiple groups and organizations to obtain and
maintain SIU’s leadership role in injury prevention and physical rehabilitation by
planning meetings, workshops, seminars, and tours at SIU and Memorial Medical
Center and attending the same outside SIU.
D. Trains and supervises 2 permanent staff (1 ThinkFirst Health Educational
Coordinator, 1 ThinkFirst Community Worker) and 2 part-time Educational
Coordinators . Writes appropriate job descriptions and interviews candidates with
the personnel staff and evaluates performance.
E. Arranges for internal or contractual assistance for short-term projects or special
events through the SIU School of Medicine’s Departments of Grants and
Contracts and Purchasing. Secures agreements with external
agencies/individuals to provide technical expertise for special Injury Prevention
Program projects. Works with SIU School of Medicine’s Public Affairs in creating
press releases, public service announcements and media events.
F. Coordinates media promotion of SIU’s Injury prevention Program with the Public
Affairs Department. Facilitates media opportunities by providing information and
statistics and/or engaging in interviews for television, radio and publications.
G. Initiates program development, writes grant applications, and submits budgets to
obtain funding and additional support for program growth.
H. Responsible for fiscal management of program through tracking program
accounts.
I. Responsible for ongoing assessment, evaluation, and modification of the
program’s activities and budget. Provides monthly or quarterly documentation of
activities and expenditures of the Injury Prevention Program in the format
requested by each program funder.
J. Responsible for fund raising with various corporations, businesses, individuals
and charitable groups to supplement grant monies supporting program costs.
Coordinates these efforts with SIU Foundation and SIU School of Medicine.
K. Provides training for injured speakers in the establishment of ThinkFirst programs
in central and southern Illinois. Manages expenditures incurred by southern
Illinois ThinkFirst chapter and secures reimbursement on this account from IDOT.
L. Establishes and maintains the program database; promotes and schedules
programs, maintaining program calendar of events. Works with SIU SOM
webmaster to maintain and update ThinkFirst website.

II. Teaching 30%
A. Presents the Injury Prevention Program to schools, community groups,
departmental in-services and other external groups as requested.
B. Recruits, educates, and trains local health care staff to act as spokespersons and
facilitates injury prevention education in the community and within SIU School of
Medicine.
C. Recruits, trains, and supervises young persons with injury-related disabilities to
participate as speakers in the Injury Prevention Program.
D. Maintains leadership role in coordinating local and statewide child passenger
safety activities. Maintain CPS Technician Instructor status per Safe Kids
Worldwide. Function as Instructor for at least one National Child Passenger
Safety certification training per year. Teaches child passenger safety classes and
in-services for both professionals and the general public

III. Research 10%
A. Participate with the National ThinkFirst office to develop successful research
methods and validate testing instruments to evaluate the effectiveness of the
ThinkFirst brain and spinal cord injury prevention program.
B. Partner with the SIU School of Medicine Departments in various activities that
promote brain and spinal cord injury prevention.
C. Works toward notoriety of the Department of Family and Community Medicine
and self through projects and publications.

IV. Service 10%
1. Represents SIU School of Medicine as a member of various panels, coalitions, work
groups, and task forces in the area of injury prevention.
2. Represents SIU Department of Family and Community Medicine as an innovative leader
in a multi-faceted approach toward injury prevention.
3. Represents the Department of Family and Community Medicine at national and
statewide meetings.
4. Participates as a member of statewide injury prevention and education networks
5. Serves as resource on brain and spinal cord injury to community members
6. Represents the Department of Family and Community Medicine in relevant hospital and
University matters.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field
2. A total of three (4) years (48 months) in teaching, management or health occupation
