Custodian
Schedule: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
Wednesdays 6am - 2pm, Thursdays 6am - 2pm, Fridays 6am - 2pm, Saturdays 9am - 5pm, Sundays 9am - 5pm
Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, and certifications):
- Previous custodial and maintenance experience

Preferred Qualifications:
- Current valid driver’s license and good driving record
- Building repair experience
- Previous use of electrical and mechanical tools/equipment

- Multilingual skills in English plus another language(s) relevant to the Skokie community
Essential Functions:
- Collects and disposes trash and recycling materials
- Vacuums carpeted areas; spot cleans; removes gum and debris
- Sweeps and mops non-carpeted areas
- Cleans bathrooms and fixtures; maintains supplies
- Maintains lighting in assigned areas
- Cleans glass
- Dusts shelves, ledges, and flat surfaces; cleans table tops and maintains furniture
- Sets up chairs, tables, etc. as needed for programs or other services
- Maintains grounds by mowing lawn, weeding, edging, pruning shrubs, etc.
- Clears ice and snow from walks as needed and plows parking lot
- Makes deliveries as needed
- Maintains current knowledge of library policies and procedures
- Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance
Other Functions:
- May strip and wax non-carpeted floors as needed
- May open and close the library building
- May assist with projects
- May be on call for building emergencies or holiday book drop duty
- May assist safety team
- May serve on library committees
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Working Conditions:
The physical demands and environmental characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. - Work may include prolonged standing, stooping, bending, lifting/moving materials (up to 75 pounds), getting down on the floor, as well as occasional computer use.
- Manual dexterity and correctable vision needed.
- Continuous navigation throughout the building and library grounds, at times using a ladder.
- May require work in hot and cold temperatures while maintaining grounds.
- Noise level is generally moderate but may be high with use of various equipment.
- Scheduling may require availability during any library operating hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and occasionally when the library is closed. Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the library may require scheduling changes and flexibility.
- Employee required to park in designated area.
