A Crew leader is to oversee field operations and ensure work is at its highest standard required by the department to fulfill the needs within Smith County.
This position will require management of personnel within an assigned work group holding all employees to their assigned duties. Performs skilled transportation maintenance activities and leads a crew of operators and laborers. Reports to the Forman, Superintendent and Roadway Administrators. Knowledge and application of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance. Work requires contact with private entities and public relations.
Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
**Field testing of heavy equipment may be a requirement prior to final hiring. **
Must be able to give and follow written and oral instructions.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.GED or High school equivalent
Work Experience

- Leads and manages the work of Roadway Maintenance Crew operations
- Maintains records on materials, supplies and personnel daily
- Operate light, heavy and specialized roadway equipment.
- May be responsible for prioritizing operations in absence of supervisor.
- Trains employees in the use of equipment and procedures.
- Collects and posts completed job data including, but not limited to, labor and equipment time, and materials ordered, used, stockpiled or returned.
- Responsible for the proper upkeep, care and storage of all crew-assigned equipment.
- Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as deemed necessary for certain locations.
- Estimating the size of drainage pipes for driveways.
- Assists in other areas as needed or assigned.
- May be required to work outside of normal business hours and in adverse weather conditions with extended hours.

Work Experience
- 5 years in Roadway maintenance related work (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent)
- 5 years supervision experience.
- Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis.
- Must have a Commercial Driver License, Class A CDL to include a with tanker endorsement.
If an applicant has a CDL Class A and not the tanker endorsement, if hired it must be obtained within 60days of hire date to continue employment.
- Subject to outside environmental conditions. Rain Snow, Extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to noise, ensure that employees are wearing appropriate PPE
- Subject to hazards-moving mechanical parts, traffic, elevated heights are some but not limited to all exposers working in roadway maintenance and construction.
- Work in cramped spaces (bend, stoop, crawl) and at varied heights
- Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: walking long distance within work area.
Salary : $64,040 - $67,937
