What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Constable position at Smith County?

The Deputy Constable for Smith County Precinct 1 Constables Office was created to assist in the service of civil process in the evening hours, patrolling the precinct, answering calls, assisting local agencies and enforcing state law.  
Precinct 1 Constables Office is very committed to our community and we are looking for an individual to add to our team that will give 100% service to our citizens.  
Working hours will fluctuate around a rotating weekend schedule with every other weekend off. Shifts will most likely be from late afternoon to early morning hours, or may possibly fluctuate to assist us in the need for law enforcement for our citizens in high-crime areas. This will NOT be a Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM job. 
Incentives include paid TCOLE training, furnished uniforms, cell phone allowance, take-home vehicle (within Smith County limits) and furnished equipment.
  • Serves process issued by the JP Court, County Court and District Court.
  • Serves as a bailiff to the Smith County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace while court is in session as needed.
  • Patrols Precinct 1 and provides law enforcement services to the citizens.
  • Answers calls for service and assists other local agencies.
  • Enforces state law.
  • Checks residential areas and businesses for activity to deter theft and burglaries.
  • Provides detailed incident reports on incidents, calls and arrests that involve the Precinct 1 Constables Office.
  • Arrests/Apprehends criminals.
  • Logs in evidence associated with criminal offenses/investigations.
  • Files criminal cases with the Smith County District Attorney’s Office.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to operate a patrol vehicle in a safe manner.
  • Must be available to be on call 24/7 for disasters or emergency situations.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must not have any dishonorable discharges from law enforcement or the military.
  • Must have a good attitude and willingness to work.
  • Interact with the public and community by using the methods of community policing to ensure a safe environment and maintain an approachable status with the citizens of Precinct 1.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of 3 years in law enforcement

Licenses and Certifications
  • Licensed Texas Peace Officer through Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
  • Intermediate Peace Officer Certification recommended but not required. 
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver License.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time. 
  • Must be able to physically subdue violent criminals.
  • Must be able to walk, run and climb.

Travel
The Deputy Constable patrols Precinct 1.

Salary : $18 - $21
