The Smithfield Public Schools has an opening for the Principal of Smithfield High School. Smithfield High has grades 9-12 and offers a comprehensive academic program including career and technical education pathways, dual enrollment courses, and advanced placement and honors courses. SHS has vibrant club activities, a strong fine arts program, and highly successful athletic teams. A new athletic field and track are in the process of being constructed.
The high school has 760 students and 85 faculty and staff members.The preferred candidate has: A distinguished record of teaching in a secondary public school (7 years)Advanced graduate degrees and RI administrative certification as a principalExperience as a principal, assistant principal, or school district administrator (3 years)The skill set to lead a largely veteran faculty and staffExperience working with staff to expand the CTE, internship, and other work-based programsExperience leading School Improvement TeamsBelieves that all students can achieve to a high levelAdditional attributes desired in the next SHS Principal: Student-focusedHighly visible and approachableExcellent verbal, written, interpersonal and presentation skillsEstablishes a school culture where students feel they belong and have a voiceA collaborative and skilled instructional leaderSomeone who understands that there are diverse methods of instruction and assessment and knows how to lead professional learning Establishes a culture of high expectations for all students, faculty, staff, and selfIs a lifelong learner, current in instructional and leadership practicesAble to establish and communicate a clear vision, taking into account stakeholder voices and strengthsExcellent problem solving skills, an out-of-the-box thinkerComfortable with change as the high school is exploring new options for work-based learning, a new schedule, and preparation for the changing high school regulations.
