What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Pastoral Care position at SMP Health - Ave Maria?
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. The Director of Pastoral Care ensures the delivery of a ministry of pastoral care, consultation, sacraments and support to residents, their loved ones and health care personnel from all faith traditions. The minister brings the healing presence of Jesus to all in accordance with the Mission of SMP Health - Ave Maria.
2. This position oversees the use and scheduling of the chapel including provision of worship opportunities and maintenance of an atmosphere conducive to prayer and meditation. The Director of Pastoral Care coordinates clergy and pastoral visitors from the religious community including orientation to policies and procedures which affect their pastoral visiting, provision of resources, consultation, and liaison with health care personnel. The incumbent participates in area clergy meetings. The Director of Pastoral Care promotes, develops, and implements educational initiatives and support groups related to psycho/social/spiritual health for residents and their loved ones, health care personnel, medical staff, and the religious community. This position maintains good standing and faith group endorsement through active participation in the life and work of his/her religious community.
3. The Director of Pastoral Care develops and maintains procedures and records of pastoral care activities, documents spiritual needs of residents, implements pastoral plans, and communicates effectively with health care team members and other members of the Pastoral Care Department. This includes providing follow-up phone calls to discharged residents, completing preparations for Memorial Services, maintaining ongoing written communications such as sympathy cards and thank you notes, documenting sacraments of Anointing, and providing guidance on appropriate décor throughout the facility. This position maintains the Pastoral Care office having adequate supplies, systems for message delivery, resident census material, religious reading materials, and necessary reference materials.
4. This position develops and administers the Pastoral Care Department plan for continuous quality improvement and participates in the continuous quality improvement program.
5. The Director of Pastoral Care identifies and appropriately raises issues of medical ethics, and utilizes and participates in existing structures which deal with the knowledge and application of the Ethical & Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care.
6. This position performs safety and infection control procedures to insure a safe and clean environment. This includes understanding and following the procedures relating to wandering residents, fire, severe weather, universal precautions and safe operation of any equipment used. The incumbent participates in regular professional continuing education and attends mandated meetings to keep informed.
