Position Summary
This position is responsible for the repair andmaintenance of primarily small engine powered equipment to include lawn mowers, pumps, chain saws, weed eaters, etc. The employee in this position works under the direction of the Sr. Mechanic and is expected to be able to work independently and plan work and make decisions for daily tasks within established policies and procedures. The position requires reliability, dependability, and accountability in all aspects of the defined role. The employee in this position will work from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday.
Essential Functions & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Inspect, service and repair, or replace items on lawn maintenance equipment as required.
- Disassemble and assemble engines on lawn equipment, connecting or attaching components, using hand tools.
- Operate automotive and lawn maintenance equipment as necessary.
- Diagnose and repair small engine powered equipment.
- Perform related work as required.
- Assist other mechanics with repairs as necessary.
- Help maintain shop equipment.
- Assist in performing minor preventive maintenance on Heavy equipment or Trucks as needed.
- Assist in performing pressure washing & greasing equipment as necessary
- Ensure all work is performed following safety guidelines

- Ability to work on 2 stroke engine motors.
- Considerable knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the small engine maintenance trade.
- Considerable knowledge of the equipment used in a large lawn maintenance operation.
- Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate sufficiently with the general public, peers and superiors to respond to inquiries and make entries on reports and records.
- Ability to diagnose and repair small engine powered equipment.
- Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
- Skilled in the use and care of hand and machine tools.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses
The ideal candidate possesses the education and experience listed below.
- Minimum eighth grade education with some trade school or vocational training.
- Minimum one-year related experience and/or training in small engine and lawn mowing equipment.
- Experience with John Deere, Kohler, Honda, Briggs and Stratten engines and mowers preferred.
- Any combination of experience, education and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES
- Class E Florida Driver License required.
- CDL License preferred.
- Must own tools of trade.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position works outdoors, and the employee is routinely subject to extreme heat, wet and humid conditions, loud noises, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and moving mechanical parts and the risk of electrical shock. On rare occasions, the employee will work indoors and be exposed to high precarious places.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely required to climb on and off heavy trucks and large type heavy off-road equipment. The employee is routinely required to operate equipment and stand, walk, talk, hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is also routinely required to sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, lift, and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and on rare occassion,100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
