What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Planning & Economic Development Intern position at South Alabama Regional Planning Commission?
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The Intern will be given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working in a professional setting, supporting the department’s daily operations. This may include gaining an understanding of the various programs available through the Community Planning & Economic Development Department to better understand the planning process.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
Receives general supervision from the Department Director. Supervisor sets the overall objectives and employee and supervisor, in consultation, develop the deadlines, projects, and work to be done; employee is responsible for planning and carrying out the assignment; and work is reviewed only from an overall standpoint.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Assist in responding to departmental inquiries from internal and external sources.
2. Assist with the collection, compilation, and analysis of data, running standard reports, and providing reports to the appropriate team members.
3. Develops maps and charts
4. Assist with the day-to-day operations of the department as requested or assigned.
5. Assist with Agency events, including, but not limited to, events set up and tear down, assisting clients and community members during an event, and responding to inquiries received during an event.
6. Attend and participate in staff meetings, training sessions, or other learning opportunities
7. Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Knowledge or desire to gain knowledge of geographic Information systems (GIS).
2. Knowledge or desire to gain knowledge of community planning and development.
3. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
4. Organizational and time management skills.
5. Knowledge and ability to operate office equipment including telephone, copy machine, fax machine, computer, and calculator.
6. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft suite of programs, Adobe design suite, Arc Pro, and ArcGIS online
7. Must be working towards an Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or higher degree in the area of interest within the Agency.
8. A valid driver's license and a good driving record.
WORK CONDITIONS:
The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
