NATURE OF WORK:
Under general supervision, performs customer service, scale operations, and cashiering functions
including weighing vehicles, determining applicable fees, processing payments, balancing daily
transactions, preparing deposits, and maintaining accurate records. Provides courteous and professional
service to the public.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed in this
classification but to provide a representative summary.
- Weighs customer vehicles and accurately records transaction data.
- Provides prompt, courteous, and accurate customer service; responds to requests for information
regarding SCSWA and Community Collection Center services.
- Receives and processes cash, check, and electronic payments; operates a cash register, issues
receipts, and makes correct change.
- Addresses public complaints, explains requirements and fees, resolves issues, or refers matters to
a scale house coordinator or supervisor when appropriate.
- Performs accounting-related duties to ensure the integrity of financial transactions.
- Balances the cash drawer daily; identifies discrepancies and takes corrective action or reports
issues as required.
- Prepares bank deposits and/or cash/check transfers; may travel to various locations to pick up
deposit bags, change funds, or related materials.
- Safeguards all receipts in accordance with accounting policies and procedures.
- Answers scale house and office telephones and provides accurate information.
- Responds to public inquiries regarding pricing, acceptable waste, hours of operation, and directions
to SCSWA facilities.
- Maintains the scale house work area, equipment, and scales in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
- Performs clerical and administrative support tasks as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years of full-time experience in cashiering or
accounting, including at least six (6) months of customer service experience. Scale attendant
and/or landfill experience preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training may be
considered in accordance with CLC Employee Handbook Section 206.5 A–E.

Licenses/Certification(s):
- Valid driver’s license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with
South Central Solid Waste Authority policy.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Strong customer service and interpersonal skills; high level of accuracy in cash handling, keyboarding, and
financial transactions; ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions and competing priorities;
ability to work independently with minimal supervision ability to follow cashiering, accounting, and
departmental policies and procedures; ability to work overtime and non-traditional schedules as required;
strong verbal and written communication skills.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL FACTORS
Work is performed primarily in a busy scale house environment with exposure to dust and musty odors.
The position involves moderate physical activity, including bending and stopping to interact with customers.
Continuous use of a cash register and adding machine is required. Prolonged standing (approximately
90% of the workday) is required. High public contact requires strong verbal communication skills and the
ability to read at a high school level.
WORK SITUATION FACTORS:
Position involves competing demands, constant interruptions, and multiple simultaneous tasks. Employees
may be assigned non-traditional hours, including one or two weekends per month. Workdays are spent
primarily in the scale house, with lunch and break periods scheduled around customer flow at the Transfer
Station. The position also requires assisting and working at other SCSWA facilities and cross-training to
provide coverage for other scale house/gate attendants. Regular attendance is an essential function of
this position.
