This is a full-time position with the Department of Social Services at the South Dakota Human Services Center in Yankton, SD. For more information on DSS, please visit https://dss.sd.gov.

The focus of this position will be to lead a team that provides structural maintenance, painting, grounds maintenance and equipment repair services for the facility.This person will also act as the assistant physical plant manager to ensure facilities and services meets the needs of clients, customers and fellow staff members in an efficient, economical and safe fashion.

The person chosen for this position will work alongside and directly supervise 6-7 employees in a variety of maintenance trade areas.

Working hours for this position are primarily Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an on call rotation but may vary according to needs of the facility.

Applicants that possess skills in carpentry, general construction, door, window, millwork, and lock repair are preferred and encouraged to apply.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Knowledge of:

  • the principles and procedures used in directing, maintaining and managing institutional physical plants according to their design layout and service demands;
  • planning, scheduling, supervision and program administration;
  • occupational hazards and safety precautions appropriate for maintenance and repair projects;
  • record keeping and report writing;
  • project management;
  • use of electronic maintenance management system.

Ability to:

  • promote a positive work environment and open communication with hospital staff;
  • gather input from employees and come up with solutions;
  • accept change and promote changes to other staff;
  • promote train and practice safety in the workplace;
  • assess the needs for repairs or preventive maintenance of physical plantfacilities and to develop plans for these projects;
  • read and interpret blueprints and construction plans;
  • accurately estimate building costs and material requirements;
  • operate construction equipment, power tools, heavy machinery and snow removal equipment.;
  • operate computers;
  • supervise employees;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • multitask when there are multiple projects taking place at the same time;
  • monitor contractor performance to ensure compliance with contractor requirements and acceptability of work;
  • pay special attention to detail.
