The load builders are responsible for rigging and loading steel so it may be sent through the galvanizing process. Load builders are required to attach rigging to large, intricately shaped pieces of material – knowledge of weight capacities, rigging types, and center of gravity is required. The safe and secure attachment of rigging is crucial to the efficiency and safety of the operation.
Duties
Load builders must work quickly and efficiently, and must be able to work both individually and as part of a team. Key duties of load builders include the following:
- Sort and prepare material to be loaded – this may include using power tools to drill holes, attaching wire and/or chains, lifting material both manually and with the use of cranes
- Place material in the load to be processed – this may entail making decisions about location, placement, weights, rigging type/location
- Material may be loaded individually, or grouped together in larger carrying devices – communication with supervisors and picklers must be maintained to stay on schedule
- Become certified to operate overhead cranes
Requirements
Physical and Environmental Considerations
Work is completed outside, and frequent lifting is required – load builders must have the physical ability required to complete tasks in a timely manner. Aspects of physical and environmental conditions load builders must consider include the following:
- Frequent lifting of material up to 20 pounds
- Occasional lifting of material up to 50 pounds
- Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling
- Constant material handling
- Repetitive hand motions
- Seasonal outdoor temperatures – shade, drinking water, shelter during rain storms provided
