What are the responsibilities and job description for the STUDENT ASSISTANT-R&D - STUDENT ENGINEER - COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS position at Southwest Research Institute?
Who We Are:
We are a team with expertise in testing and modeling in computers the response of materials at high strain rates, high temperatures, and high pressures. This includes experiments in the Hopkinson bar and plate-impact as well as computations with codes like CTH, LS-DYNA, and EPIC.
Objectives of this Role:
- Assist engineers and project managers in the Engineering Dynamics Dept. with experimental data analysis and interpretation, test and system design, presentation preparation and documentation of work performed.
- May be involved in experimental design, and hands-on field or lab work with impact test systems or other high energy testing, including lasers.
- Local Year Round Student.
- Desire minimum 20 hours a week but can be flexible.
- Summer employment internship for local San Antonio student; internship may continue to Fall semester.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
- Analysis of data trends and quantifying variance needed.
- May include some running of finite element computer models.
- Experiments in the Hopkinson bar and plate-impact as well as computations with codes like CTH, LS-DYNA, and EPIC.
Requirements:
- Must be pursuing a Bachelors degree at the junior level in a Mechanical Engineering program or other related engineering disciplines
- Ability to work in MATLAB, LabView and CAD programs like SolidWorks
- Thorough understanding of or ability to be trained on structural mechanics
- Knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics or interest in learning
- Familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint, CAD drawing packag; finite element modeling, junior level engineering classes, mathematics, and physics
- A valid/clear driver's license is required
