What are the responsibilities and job description for the Speech Language Pathologist-Ancillary Position position at Special Student Services?

This position begins with the 2024-2025 school year. 

 

Licensure: Must hold a NMPED Speech Language Pathologist K-12 License or a valid Speech Language Pathologist license issued by the New Mexico Speech Language Pathology & Audiology Board and be able to obtain the PED license.  

 

Summary:

 

The speech language pathologist (SLP) performs screenings, assess student condition, and designs therapy and treatment plans to help the student develop necessary speech skills that help  individual students to derive full benefit from the district’s educational services. The SLP should be caring and knowledgeable about speech-related conditions and therapies.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  11. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  12. Other tasks as may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the immediate supervisor and/or the superintendent.

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
  2. Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
  3. Provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, hearing, and language impairments.
  4. Provide screening to identify students with speech/language impairments at regular intervals and at specified levels.
  5. Assist in proper referrals of students and families to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
  6. Develop appropriate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to meet students’ needs and to correct existing speech or language impairments.
  7. Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy through suggestions for the students’ daily activities.
  8. Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
  9. Provide in-service education and serve as a consultant to teachers and staff concerning speech/language improvement.
  10. Keep thorough, ongoing records for the individual student receiving speech/language services.
  11. Maintain lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.
  12. Compile case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate.
  13. Assume primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.
  14. Complete all required paperwork, including but not limited to: IEP goals/objectives, evaluations, caseload reports, and Medicaid billing.
