OVERVIEW

The mission of Spokane Sports is to strengthen our community through the power of sports. Operating as a non-profit sports commission, our organization focuses on bidding, creating and delivering sporting events that drive economic impact for our region.  

 

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will play a pivotal role–serving as a strategist, providing oversight of the non-profit, and supporting the vision for the future. The ideal candidate brings a passion for the organization’s mission, is dynamic, collaborative, and an experienced professional.

 

ESSENTIAL ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Champion the organization's mission, vision, and initiatives
  • Participate in the selection and oversight of the Chief Executive Officer
  • Work alongside the Chief Executive Officer, other board members, stakeholders, and staff to drive initiatives and strategic decision making
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and alignment with the organization's mission
  • Aid in budget development and financial priorities
  • Uphold legal and ethical standards to maintain organizational integrity
  • Approve organizational policies and maintain a strong knowledge of board matters

Focus on the organization's mission before one's own preferences or professional priorities. Board membership is based on individual skillset and organizational need–not an appointment or representative from an organization. Current organizational priority is foundational work, with focus on sustainable growth.
  • Integrity: Demonstrate the highest level of commitment to honesty and strong moral principles.
  • Innovation: Exhibit a track record of visionary thinking and contribute to the growth of companies or organizations in meaningful ways.
  • Engagement: Participate in meetings of the Board of Directors, and actively participate on one or more committees or task forces, and attend key special events for organization; anticipated to be two or more annually.
  • Knowledgeable: Prepare and stay informed about the affairs of the organization to properly perform their duty and act in the best interest of the organization.
  • Connector: Uphold and elevate the Spokane Sports brand when representing the organization with stakeholders, supporting Spokane Sports' mission and core values.
  • Composure: Demonstrate advanced communication skills, diplomacy, and tact in complex situations.

 

SCOPE & COMMITMENT

  • Location: Spokane, WA | Remote candidates welcome. Two or more in-person meetings annually, with travel expenses paid by organization.
  • Financial Contribution Expectation: $0.
  • Status: Volunteer role, without compensation.
  • Time Commitment: 1.5hr hybrid Board Meetings, held on the first Wednesday of the month at 12:00pm PST. Engagement with committees, task forces and special events.

  • Board Size: No less than five, no more than 15 board members.
  • Board Term: Board term of three years, with each member serving up to two terms. Under special circumstances, the nominating committee can recommend a third term.

 

TIMELINE

  • August 2025:Nomination process opens for new board members; candidates can self-nominate, and can apply at Spokanesports.Bamboohr.com
  • September 22, 2025:
    Application deadline for new board members.
  • September 24-October 8:Review of Board Member applicants and interviews.
  • November 5, 2025 Board Retreat:Proposed slate of candidates from nominating committee presented. E-ballots sent electronically to Board for voting. 
  • November 2025:Confirmation of Board members via email, selection and non-selection.
  • January 2025:Term begins for new board members, and board member orientation.
