What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian Technician I position at Spotsylvania County?
Under limited supervision, performs a variety of custodial duties in the care and maintenance of County buildings, grounds and facilities. Work may involve routine custodial functions such as sweeping, mopping, washing walls and fixtures, etc., and performing physically strenuous activities such as mowing, pruning trees, moving furniture, minor equipment repair, heavy floor stripping, and operating waxing and buffing equipment. Duties fluctuate slightly within the job title according to assignment and specific needs of area of assignment. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in completion of assigned tasks. Reports to the Facilities Maintenance Foreman.
Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed.
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
• Secures and locks building at appropriate times; unlocks buildings.
- Performs janitorial functions such as sweeping, mopping, washing walls, stripping floors, waxing, buffing equipment and fixtures, etc.
• Cleans windows, walls, wood work and light fixtures.
• Sets up and breaks down conference rooms for meetings, arranging furniture as requested.
• Empties trash receptacles.
• Cleans, dusts, and polishes tables and other furniture.
• Performs other related duties as required.
High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) to two (2) years of experience in labor-intensive maintenance work; or any combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Employees in this position are required to wear safety shoes for some departments.
- Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in maintenance work and repair of such.
- Knowledge of maintenance procedures and is able to follow instructions.
- Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work. Is able to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
- Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.
- Ability to prepare forms, time sheets and using prescribed format.
- Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
- Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
- Ability to utilize mathematical formulas. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages.

- Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
Salary : $17 - $24
