THIS POSITION IS TEMPORARY FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE 24/25 SCHOOL YEAR

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Student Support Specialist is a classified position that provides direct support to students and works collaboratively with school- and district-based teams to improve attendance and graduation rates. The staff member also maintains a cooperative attitude with staff, parents, and students as this position is highly team-oriented.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties of this position include the following.  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Collaboratively supports various graduation initiatives through participation in and coordination of Student Intervention Teams.
  2. Collaboratively supports attendance initiatives through participation in and coordination of Attendance teams, including outreach, truancy referrals, 10-day drops.
  3. Partners with faculty (including Student Success Coach, Credit Recovery, College and Career Readiness), administration, and community partners to provide appropriate Multi-Tiered supports to students
  4. Acts as the building liaison and provides direct support to students and families who qualify McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance services.
  5. Works with students and counselors to develop attendance and graduation plans, as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with youth who have experienced hardships or challenges in educational settings.
  • Skills and knowledge in applying trauma-informed practices to interactions with students and families.
  • Skills and knowledge in developing and implementing multi-tiered systems of support plans. Special education experience preferred.
  • Proven experience in improving graduation and/or attendance rates in high school students using culturally responsive practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in team and individual settings.
  • Ability to access, run, and analyze data reports.
  • Passionate about working with and motivating struggling high school students and their families.
  • Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English, bilingual preferred.    Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions.  Ability to verbally respond to common inquiries.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.  Creative problem-solver.
  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use e-mail, internet software (including student information systems), word processing software.
  • Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents and members of the community.  Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions.
