Position Summary: The Food Service Assistant/Dishwasher(FSA) assists the Food & Nutrition Services Supervisor (FNSS) to assure lunch services rendered at St. Joseph Academy (SJA) are extended consistent with accepted national food handling standards, SJA mission and values, the policies and procedures of the institution, and the standards of all regulating and licensing agencies. The FSA performs a variety of food preparation services in the delivery of the SJA children’s lunch service. The FSA washes lunch dishes as well as sets up The FSA assists in the preparation of food for children, assists with effective equipment operations, sanitization; facility cleaning, and trouble shoots in production area to alert management of equipment malfunctions and/or failures.    The FSA will fill in for vacation and absences of other Food Service staff.

Position Reports to: Food & Nutrition Services Supervisor

Qualifications:
  • High school degree or GED preferred
  • Experience in food service preparation preferred
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred
  • Safe Serve certification required with in the first year of employment 
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze an issue, identify options, and implement solutions
  • Interest in working with a child population
  • Ability to work cooperatively with people in and outside of Food & Nutrition Services department
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing); effectively interact with children, families, and staff members
  • Possesses good hand-eye coordination
  • Ability to read, write and follow directions and instructions
  • Detail oriented; ability to multi-task, set priorities, work under pressure, and meet deadlines

JOB DESCRIPTION                          
Essential Job Functions/Duties    
 
  • Extends excellent service to all children
  • Assures each child’s right to privacy and confidentiality, at all times
  • Models behaviors that foster the “child-centered” philosophy to other staff
  • Washes dishes from lunch service
  • Meal/Cart set-up for Childcare program
  • Prepares food according to menus and recipes
  • Provides food portions and assembles in a sanitary manner according to department and DPI standards
  • Handles food to maintain appropriate temperatures according to department standards as evidenced by temperature reading at mealtime
  • Replenishes service line as quantities indicate--ensures that service is not disrupted because of low or depleted food supply
  • Uses a variety of communication methods to proactively identify, anticipate, prevent, or address issues and inter-department concerns, problems, or conflicts
  • Maintains safety and sanitation standards in work area—cleaning and sanitizing area after each assignment according to established department guidelines
  • Operates and secures all equipment and supplies in a safe manner, according to department standards to safeguard children, and co-worker’s health and well-being
  • Utilizes accepted national food service handling standards and procedures in the delivery of School Breakfast Service
  • Complies with all department clerical, statistical, and food handling/storage/service policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to the productivity and cost-effectiveness of the department
  • Adheres to established policies, procedures, and compliance with professional, governmental, and regulatory standards
  • Complies with all allergy lists and substitutions and record keeping that pertain to such items.
  • Labels, dates and restocks all food items and supplies—legibly enough to prevent errors—prior to, during, and after each meal service; ensuring proper wrapping and storage according to department quality control standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Physical and Mental Requirements:
Must have ability to walk and stand routinely throughout the shift.  Must have the ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. with ease and push up to 350 lbs. with the appropriate equipment. Must have the ability to deal effectively with the stress of responding quickly and be engaged in multiple tasks.  

Environmental Conditions:
Performs duties with exposure to infectious or communicable diseases inherent to care of children and occasional exposure to loud or unpleasant voices due to unpredictable behavior of residents and seasonal exposure to high humidity due to temperature control of the facility.   Exposure to varying types of ware chemicals, cleaning agents and various types of food service areas that contain possible hazards such as slippery surfaces.
