What are the responsibilities and job description for the Biology and Chemistry Teacher position at St. Louis University High?

A Science Teacher at St. Louis University High School serves the unique Catholic and Jesuit educational and formational mission of the school by designing and implementing educational curriculum in one or more academic subjects, covering additional required supervisory, formational and co-curricular responsibilities and fulfilling school expectations for ongoing professional and spiritual development.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plans and develops an engaging, age-appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to the school mission and philosophy, educational best practices as well as Jesuit and St. Louis U. High curriculum guidelines.
  • Designs and delivers individual lesson plans in one or more academic subjects using a variety of teaching techniques and appealing to various learning styles.
  • Prepares materials for lessons, assignments, and tests; evaluates, corrects, and grades student performance.
  • Discusses academic difficulties or behavioral problems with students as they arise and reports specific challenges and plans for support to school leadership and learning resource personnel.
  • Monitors students' progress throughout the year and evaluates knowledge, skills and competence for performance in related practical tasks and projects.
  • Provides support for character and spiritual formation as outlined in the document "The Graduate at Graduation."
  • Collaborates with members of the Chemistry and Biology team to design, execute and improve classroom instruction and lab activities.
  • Collaborates with Student Support Services to help students select a college or course of study.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with school norms and state laws and policies.
  • Communicates progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as appropriate, other faculty, staff, and/or principal.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with parents.
  • Enforces safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintains required paperwork for individual student files, attendance and incident reports, and other necessary records.
  • Monitors halls, study periods, lunchrooms and covers other support tasks with other faculty and staff.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, Pre-Tenure formation programs, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, training seminars and ongoing retreat and spiritual formation activities.
  • Maintains knowledge of research, developments, and best practices in secondary education generally and Catholic and Jesuit education specifically.
  • Performs related tasks such as sponsoring student activities or organizations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of the pedagogy and best practices of education, including Catholic and Jesuit educational philosophy and pedagogy.
  • Desire to teach secondary school-aged students, ability to adapt approaches to instruction and engagement their developmental status and willingness to embrace and support the Catholic and Jesuit identity and mission of the school.
  • The ability to design lessons that teach curriculum in an engaging manner, applying various teaching methods such as the flipped classroom, lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and individual or collaborative projects and research.
  • Design laboratory experiments relevant to current lessons.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control the classroom.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Creative analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Google Suite and other essential educational software.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Master's degree highly preferred.
  • State accreditation and licensing preferred.
  • Prior teaching experience highly preferred.
  • Specialized training in teaching secondary students is preferred.
