EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
PURPOSE AND NATURE OF WORK
Work of this class involves operating a light tractor equipped with a gang mower, bush hog, or blade-type cutting attachment; or operating other light automotive equipment such as a single-axle flatbed, crew, or dump truck. In addition to the safe and efficient operation of equipment, employees frequently participate in maintenance, repair and minor construction activities. Routine or repetitive assignments are performed under general supervision. Special assignments are carried out under the close supervision of a supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (NOTE: These examples are intended only to illustrate the various types of work performed by incumbents in this class. All of the duties performed by any one incumbent may not be listed.)
Ø Equipment Operator I serves as an assistant to the Coordinator of Public Works and is responsible for the following:
· Drive a tractor with auxiliary equipment used for cutting grass and weeds along streets and medians, in parks, and around plant facilities
· Drives a single-axle flatbed, crew, or dump truck to haul workers and/or materials and equipment to the worksite
· Works with a street crew spreading and rolling asphalt
· Performs laboring tasks in maintenance, repair, and minor construction work
· Checks assigned equipment for observable mechanical malfunctions and either makes minor repairs or reports the problem to proper personnel
· Checks air, gas, water, and oil levels; has equipment serviced
· Cleans assigned equipment
· May act as a relief operator on equipment of a higher class
· Performs related work as required
COMPENTENCIES REQUIRED
o Ability to use & care for machinery, equipment and tools
o Ability to read and interpret information
o Ability to use initiative, discretion, and judgement within established procedures, guidelines, and rules
o Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
o Ability to operate passenger automobiles, pick-up trucks, or light duty equipment
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives administrative direction from the Coordinator of Public Works and performs the duty assignments within broad parameters defined by organizational requirements and accepted practices.
