Who we are:
St. Nicks Alliance, a North Brooklyn based community organization, seeks to transform lives of low- and
moderate-income people through employment, education, housing, elder care and social services. We do this
by delivering impactful services with measurable outcomes to children, adults, and the elderly. As a civic
anchor, we carry out this mission within the context of building a sustainable community for all people through
the arts, environmental advocacy, and urban planning.
We are currently seeking a full-time Community Organizer for our 306 Union Ave location in Williamsburg,
Brooklyn.
What you’ll do:
As the community organizer is responsible to assist with St Nicks Alliance’s community organizing efforts around
safe and affordable housing and anti-displacement. The position reports to the deputy director of community
preservation.
Responsibilities:
1. Go out in the field to outreach and engage rent regulated tenants on property conditions, understanding
housing rights, potential harassment in order to counter displacement.
2. Assist in combatting displacement by identifying building targets, building assessment, door knocking
and one to one counseling.
3. Assist housing counselors in creating and strengthening tenant associations.
4. Assist with the facilitation of grassroots and coalition meetings.
5. Assist with the leadership development activities for tenant associations and local grassroots
organizations.
6. Represent St. Nicks Alliance in meetings and events with other local and citywide organizations and
agencies.
7. Assist with outreach to St. Nicks Alliance and its affiliate’s organizations on their services and events,
especially the housing counseling and training services.
8. Assist with the maintenance of data tracking tenant associations and leadership development and assist
in preparing reports for city agencies and funders
What we are looking for:
candidate must be fluent in English and Spanish
passionate about housing, racial, and immigrant justice with tenants
experience facilitating workshops or public presentations — preferred
excellent written and verbal communication skills
familiarity of housing law in New York City — desirable
an ability to relate to a wide range of people, including low-income families, elected officials, legal
services providers, and other community-based organizations.
ability to go out in the field and walk-up stairs in multiple properties
ability to work evenings and weekends (as necessary)
