What are the responsibilities and job description for the Full Time Food Service Specialist, starting pay $16.50/hour position at STAR Community Justice Center?
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Food Service Manager, the Food Service Specialist performs a variety of semi-skilled kitchen/cafeteria related duties as assigned, according to his/her level of proficiency and departmental need, and in compliance with the policies and procedures of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the Scioto County Ohio Health Department.
General Responsibilities:
- Know and adhere to STAR Community Justice Center's policies and procedures
- Coordinate with, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with all other STAR co-workers, managers, supervisors and members of the general public
- Read and understand menus and menu items, thermometers, and gauges on kitchen equipment
- Follow both oral and written instructions that include the ability to prepare and serve food products as required by individual menus
- Visually identify cleaning products, food products, and other work area items
- Perform short cycle and repetitive duties
- Exhibit eye, hand and food coordination and manual dexterity to perform tasks in a safe and rapid fashion
- Stand for a minimum of one hour
- Correctly distribute food items to individual resident trays
- Know and understand all Servsafe and Portsmouth Health Department rules and guidelines
- Conduct searches of all residents prior to leaving the work area everyday
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Work performed indoors in an institutional setting which includes exposure to humidity, extremes of heat and cold, and exposure to mechanical and burn hazards requiring close attention to safety guidelines
- Fast-paced environment to facilitate completion of assigned tasks within allotted timeframes
- Moderate to loud noise levels
- Physical activity including near-constant standing, bending, walking and balancing; occasional kneeling, climbing, stooping/crouching as well as minimal periods of sitting
- Frequent lifting/carrying of items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Frequent pushing of carts and racks requiring forces ranging from 10 lbs. to 45
- Repetitive manual tasks involving constant hand, wrist, elbow and arm movement, as well as frequent gripping and grasping, with occasional precision finger movement and grip
- Rapid response to emergencies
- Effective interaction with co-workers and other staff to accomplish duties in accordance with established policies and procedures of STAR Community Justice Center
- Work hours including early morning, day, and evening hours based on assigned shift, including weekends, holidays and occasional overtime
Performance Evaluation:
Staff holding this position will be evaluated on the following intervals of employment: 90th day, 6 month, 1 year, and annually thereafter. The following domains will be assessed:

Qualifications and Skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalency and/or Degree in food service is preferred
- Valid driver’s license
- Six months full-time work experience involving food preparation and/or food service in an institutional setting (e.g. hospital, nursing home, school, correctional facility, military facility)
- Successful completion of a local and national criminal record check
