State Compensation Insurance Fund’s Core Infrastructure and Support team has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Server Operations position.
The incumbent will be responsible for managing a diverse team of technologies including Linux/Windows operating system, Enterprise Storage, Active Directory, Azure, M365, Virtualization.
Under general direction of the IT Systems Services Manager (ITM II) the incumbent will:
- Directly manage three IT Managers (IT Supervisor II) a staff of up to 27 administrators supporting enterprise technology systems in VMware, Nutanix, NetApp, Azure, M365, Mainframe, Data Center and remote office IT systems.
- Maintain the unit 's budget
- Work with internal Procurement and Vendor contracts
- Work with vendors on SOW’s, RFP’s and coordination
- Monitor goals and objectives of multiple units and keep them on target
- Plan, conduct, and coordinate complex information technology assignments
- Oversee designs and apply new methods and solutions and can function as oversight and planning for multiple IT enterprise level projects.
- Participate in the specification of business requirements and implement plans for technically advanced solutions
- Interact with and support partner teams in IT and our business partners.
The position will be filled in either of the following locations: Pleasanton, Riverside and Vacaville.

Working Conditions
The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.
Selected candidate(s) hired may be required to attend in-person Onboarding at our Vacaville office with expenses for attendance paid by State Fund.

Special Requirements
Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. Desired Core Competencies:
The selected candidate will have the following skills and abilities:
- 4 years of technical experience in system/network architecture, and any or all the following: design and implementation in Microsoft 365 technologies, ITSM principles and concepts, procedure and policy documentation concepts and related fields.
- Understand potentially complex cross product implications, communicate, influence and work with a wide audience to help drive the target system architecture across the State Fund systems portfolio.
- The ability to identify key trends and emerging technologies that can enhance or impact the solution architecture to maximize the value of State Funds systems.
- Proficient in contributing to technology and business planning for IT organizations
- Experience in the implementation and support of Active Directory/Entra.
- Experience in the implementation and securing of Linux/Windows
- Experience in the implementation and support of M365/CoPilot and Azure
- Experience recommending new policies and procedures to eliminate or reduce barriers to effective production to improve customer service.
- The ability to use sound judgment; thinking strategically and critically
- Proficient in infrastructure design, implementation planning, deployment support, software strategy, system troubleshooting, performance engineering and optimization, maintenance strategy
- The ability to review and assess new technologies as they apply to area of responsibility
- Proficient at coordinating the work of staff to ensure compliance with policy and contract
- Expert in communicating complex technical issues to non-technical personnel, in relatable terms
- Proven record of adaptability and commitment to excellence
