COURTROOM DUTIES

Prepare and maintain courtrooms for daily scheduled hearings, including setup, organization, and operation of electronic recording equipment. Coordinate hearings by managing phone calls, conference calls, and the participation of multiple parties. Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot recording systems to ensure accurate and complete records of proceedings. Open court sessions, administer oaths, and facilitate the timely flow of cases, parties, and attorneys. Maintain detailed log notes and manage the control, security, playback, and return of exhibits and recorded proceedings. Prepare and maintain jury trial documentation, including juror records, witness lists, and trial forms, in accordance with court rules and procedures.

DUTIES OUTSIDE OF THE COURTROOM

Process and manage assigned case types by reviewing and filing court documents, maintaining case records, and scheduling hearings and trials. Prepare court calendars, warrants, and related case materials, respond to records requests, and manage record retention. Provide front-counter and telephone customer service by assisting the public, accepting filings and payments, preparing release paperwork, and explaining court procedures in accordance with Alaska Court System standards.

The Work Hours

Full-time court employees are currently scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week. The work hours for this position are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break. This position may fill in as a back-up weekend In-Court Clerk.

The Dimond Courthouse is located on 4th Street near the Historic District in Juneau. As a Courtroom Judicial Assistant, you will become part of the Juneau Trial Court helping to fulfill the mission of the Alaska Court System.

Graduation from high school or completion of a General Education Development (GED) certificate AND one year of office clerical experience AND the ability to keyboard at least 40 words per minute (net).

Substitution

Additional office clerical work experience will substitute for the high school diploma or GED certificate on a month-for-month basis.

Completion of 36 semester credit hours or 48 quarter credit hours of coursework from an accredited college will substitute for the year of required office clerical experience.

Completion of an appropriate vocational training course of study such as legal secretary, paralegal, or office skills will substitute for the required office clerical experience on a month-for-month basis.

  • Copies of your most recent (2) performance evaluations or two (2) letters of recommendation.
  • A list of three (3) professional references who have had supervisory authority over you along with their daytime contact phone numbers and email addresses.

Keyboarding Certification Required

Attach a recent keyboarding certification (dated within one year) to your application that verifies your keyboarding speed of 40 wpm or higher (net). Online keyboarding tests (often at no cost) are accepted with a valid website address noted on the document. Acceptable websites include: www.ratatype.com and www.typingtest.com.

WORK HISTORY

If using work experience not already documented in your application, provide the employer’s name, your job title, dates of employment and whether full or part-time. Applications will be reviewed to determine if the responses are supported and Minimum Qualifications are clearly met. If they are not, the applicant will not advance to the interview and selection phase of the recruitment.

EDUCATION

If post-secondary education is required to meet the Minimum Qualifications, you must fill in the Education and Training section of the application. If you have not obtained a degree, please indicate the number of credit hours earned in the Degree Obtained field. Copies of academic transcripts will be required at time of interview.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Applicants will be required to meet the Minimum Qualifications as outlined above. Unfortunately, we cannot always interview all applicants. If your application is considered "not qualified," you will be sent a notice within two weeks after the closing date for this recruitment. If you believe your application was improperly disqualified, you may appeal this decision to the Human Resources Director at 820 West 4th Avenue, Anchorage, AK 99501-2005 within five workdays from the date the notice is mailed to you. Qualified applications will be forwarded to the hiring supervisor.

NEPOTISM REVIEW

To avoid a conflict of interest and the appearance of impropriety, applicants who have a spouse, close relative, and/or regular member of their household employed by the Alaska Court System may not be considered for employment without the approval of the Administrative Director.
