Job Summary
This position will work as a technician in the Mix Design Lab. Schedules and performs testing of balanced mix design materials within the asphalt/concrete/mix design section of ADOT's Central Materials Laboratory. Reviews laboratory test data for completeness, accuracy, and material compliance. Prepares balanced mix design reports for Lab Supervisor and Bituminous Engineer. Serves as technical support advisor and contact person for project personnel and contractors. Trains new employees in the area of balanced mix design testing.
Job Duties
Perform laboratory tests and calibrate laboratory instruments; primarily in the mix design lab.
Check laboratory test data for completeness and accuracy. Enter data into the computer. Prepare and distribute balanced mix design reports.
Take technical classes. Coach, train and mentor other employees. May need to travel and drive a state vehicle.
Serve as lead in ongoing balanced mix design research projects in the mix design laboratory. Review and update test methods.
Schedule testing of all balanced mix design materials.
Communicate with management, project and contract staff regarding sample testing status.

Knowledge In
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Strong background in laboratory sciences. Three years of experience as Transportation Construction Technician 3 performing asphalt concrete mix testing.
Pre-Employment Requirements
This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and Arizona test methods.
- ADOT construction, standards and specifications.
- Asphalt mix design methodology, and asphaltic concrete physical properties.
- Communication, both written and oral.
- Mathematics and complex equations.
- Laboratory sample preparation and testing.
- Various computer programs, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- Analyze laboratory data and draw conclusions from and about that data.
- Mentor and motivate other employees.
- Perform several tasks at the same time.
