The History Colorado AmeriCorps Program endeavors to address three broad areas of community need across the state: equitable K-12 educational outcomes, quality history educational programming, and the tools to preserve and share a more inclusive Colorado history. This initiative is part of History Colorado's strategic goals to invest in rural prosperity, strengthen education through history, and share the diverse stories of Colorado's past.

The AmeriCorps member will serve as part of the Education Department at the museum, working directly under the supervision of the Education Coordinator. Their primary focus will be to support and deliver high-impact educational programming to K-12 students, with an emphasis on equitable access to culturally relevant history education. The member will play a key role in facilitating Hands-on-History programs, field trips, and other student focused educational experiences. As capacity allows, the AmeriCorps member may also assist with community events, adult educational programming, and broader outreach initiatives. 

AmeriCorps Member Perks Include:

Description of Job

Terms of Service:

  • The Member will serve at the Ute Indian Museum.

  • The AmeriCorps member will serve for an average of 35 hours per week during the service term, for a minimum of 1700 hours over the course of their service term.

  • Flexible hours are required, including occasional evenings. Members may be expected to commit to weekend hours regularly.

  • The AmeriCorps member will be directly supervised by the Education Coordinator, with additional oversight and support provided by the Program Manager.

  • Service term begins September 08, 2025 and ends August 21, 2026.

  • Mandatory Orientation on September 8th and 9th, 2025 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Facilitate Hands-On History programming, field trips, classroom visits, and other educational activities, tailoring content to be culturally relevant and aligned with academic standards.

  • Collaborate with museum staff and community partners to enhance program reach and impact.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to the continuous improvement of educational programming.

  • Support and facilitate other History Colorado community engagement and story initiative projects as needed.

  • Facilitate educational tours for youth and adult audiences, lead overnight museum camps (including overnight supervision), and support cultural programming and research initiatives.

Service Term Overview: 
  • Be available for Hands-On History Camps during Montrose school breaks (schedule subject to change):

    • Select days in December near Christmas

    • April 6–10, 2026 - Spring Break

    • Summer session: June 8 – July 24, 2026 (six weeks total)

  • September 22–26, 2025: Cottonwood Days

  • October 18, 2025: Powwow

  • December 6, 2025: Christmas Sale with Weavers Guild

  • May/June 2026 (date TBD): Community Appreciation Day

  • August 15, 2026: Youth Appreciation Day

Training and Support Provided:

  • In-person orientation to History Colorado at the History Colorado Center, mileage and lodging costs covered.

  • Training provided by site supervisors for position responsibilities.

  • Additional training and professional development opportunities offered throughout the service term.

AmeriCorps positions are service opportunities and not employment positions. Members will receive a living allowance, training, and support during their service term.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

  • Strong interest in history, education, or a related field.

  • Experience in educational programming, museum education, or working with K-12 students preferred.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • 18 years of age or older.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • A U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident, due to AmeriCorps rules and regulations.

  • Ability to pass criminal history checks required.

  • Patience is required, as you will be in a position that largely serves children.

  • Background in history, education, cultural studies, or a related discipline preferred.

  • Familiarity with Colorado's diverse historical and cultural landscapes preferred

  • Driver’s License or (ability to obtain)

  • Reliable transportation

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.

  • Flexibility to work weekends and special events as needed.

  • May require lifting heavy objects and working on ladders.

  • May require periodic travel by car, van, and truck to locations throughout the state, typically for periods of less than one week in duration.

A pre-service criminal background check will be conducted as part of the selection process. Felony convictions or conviction of crimes of moral turpitude or convictions of misdemeanors related to position duties may disqualify you from being considered for this position.
