Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is independent professional work conducting complex medical laboratory tests for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. A state of Florida Clinical Laboratory License is required. This position has On-Call Assignment responsibilities.
Performs testing and provides technical support in HIV serology department, performs HIV-1/2 antigen/antibody screening testing using Abbot architect combo assays, HIV1/HIV2 supplemental testing and Nucleic Acid Amplification tests following the Standard operating procedures and testing algorithm. Participates in laboratory proficiency testing. Performs quality control and quality assurance related documentation, including daily temperature log, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting. Communicate with ordering physicians and clinics for unsatisfactory samples. Follows BPHL/DOH safety guidelines at all times. Maintains up-to date inventory of supplies and reagents. Prepares and discards daily medical waste following Bureau of Laboratories Biowaste protocol. Attends staff meetings and required training.
Removes the brain from animals to be tested for rabies and prepares and examines it for the presence of rabies virus, using fluorescent microscopy and other staining techniques. Respond to On-Call requirements during weekend or holiday hours as needed to perform rabies testing.
Performs testing and provides support in Hepatitis department and Aptima CT/GC testing, Including Quality control, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
Performs various duties as needed including quality control and quality assurance of the section, proficiency testing, and assists in maintaining up-to-date inventory of supplies, reagents and media.
Prepares and discards daily medical waste following Bureau of Public Health Laboratories Bio-waste protocol. Attends staff meetings and required training. Follows BOL/DOH safety policies.
Assists other sections, as required.
Participates in on-call duty assignments with other staff, to provide telephone coverage for the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories. The incumbent will be available to accept all incoming calls after-hours weekdays, weekends and holidays; assess the urgency of each call; and provide an appropriate response. On occasions, a call dealing with selected urgent diseases or a community-wide emergency will require extensive follow-up and coordination with other departmental units and other organizations/agencies that is beyond the scope of the on-call assignment. Observes established work schedule as well as leave and attendance rules, regulations, and procedures, 100% of the time.
