Title:  Senior Health Educator

Location:  Naples, FL

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a professional level Senior Health Educator position who provides technical oversight for the Tobacco Control & Prevention Program under the direction of the Health Education Program Manager. Incumbent provides consultation to individual and organizational members of the community regarding planning, implementing and evaluation of tobacco control policies. Consults and gains support of decision makers and partners by informing them of effective tobacco prevention and/or control interventions for policy development and implementation, as appropriate. Assists in writing grant proposal for extending funding and delivery of tobacco prevention education services and assists with the management of the tobacco control program grant by monitoring the timeline, programmatic, and budgetary matters related to the grant. Assists in preparing purchase requests, and maintaining and creating budget spreadsheets, prepares documents for vendors and ensures compliance with state guidelines. Provides consultation to individual and organizational members of the community regarding planning, implementing and evaluation of tobacco control policies. Acts as the Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) Chapter Coordinator and is responsible for all duties related to SWAT activities. The individual serves as a resource for all Tobacco Control & Prevention Program Initiatives and serves as a champion for making tobacco less desirable, acceptable, and accessible in an effort to protect the public's health. Incumbent is required to remain tobacco-free during the course of their employment in this position and agrees to adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.

If selected for an interview, be prepared to deliver a short, no longer than 5-minute PowerPoint presentation on tobacco control and prevention. Bring 3 handouts of the presentation.

 

  • Coordinate, plan and implement activities for the tobacco control program grant by monitoring the timeline, programmatic, and budgetary matters related to the grant. Assist in writing grant proposal for extending funding and delivery of tobacco prevention education services. Prepare purchase requests, assist in maintaining budget spreadsheets, prepare documents for vendors and ensure compliance with the state guidelines (such as quotes and budget restrictions).

 

  • Assist in the development of a tobacco-prevention work plan and submit quarterly reports as required to ensure appropriate progress on the work plan. Create and maintain timelines (weekly and monthly) for the work plan. Perform community needs assessments to identify strategies for the implementation of tobacco policies to effectively reduce tobacco use and access to tobacco products, as well as to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke. Provide technical assistance to community organizations/partners in the area of tobacco prevention and control policies. Collect and analyze data to ensure program outcomes.

 

  • Serve as a point of contact for all tobacco prevention and control for the county health department regarding tobacco cessation programs (Florida Quit Your Way and tobacco cessation services offered at the local level) and act as a community resource on tobacco-related policy initiatives. Provide consultation to individuals and organizational members of the community regarding planning, implementing and evaluation of tobacco control policies. Consult and gain support of decision makers and partners by informing them of effective tobacco prevention and/or control interventions for policy development and implementation, as appropriate. Develop and make presentations related to the workplan tobacco control policy areas. 

 

  • Coordinate the Tobacco Free Partnership (TFP) by building and maintaining membership. Work with Tobacco Free Partnership members to promote policy changes in Collier regarding tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke. Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with community leaders including business, education, health care, housing, and elected/appointed officials. Responsible for research and analysis of tobacco policy issues to train and mobilize the community to support policy change around tobacco. Assure that Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) and Tobacco Free Partnership members receive training on effective tobacco prevention and control strategies as well as the Tobacco Free Partnership’s mission, goals, and objectives. Represent the Florida Department of Health in Collier County at Tobacco Prevention program statewide and regional trainings, and other coalitions as requested.

 

  • Act as the Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) Chapter Coordinator and be responsible for all duties related to Students Working Against Tobacco activities. Transport and chaperon’s youth to tobacco prevention and control events at local, regional, and state levels. Maintain and inventory tobacco resource materials.

 

  • Initiate public health messaging to the Partnership and Public Information Officer (PIO) in marketing of relevant policy initiatives as requested. Prepare press releases, feature stories and Public Service Announcements. Serve as an additional tobacco prevention program subject expert when requested by the Public Information Officer to address media.

 

  • Cross-train all duties with other tobacco staff and serve as back up, as needed. Provide content to tobacco prevention related websites and social media sites and assist with maintenance of sites as needed.

  • Demonstrates skills to facilitate groups.
  • Demonstrates skills with critical thinking, program planning, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Ability to describe factors affecting the health of a community, and disparate populations.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows-based business software applications.
  • Demonstrates skills to communicate and interact effectively, clearly, and concisely through oral and written means to DOH staff, community partners, and members of the public.
  • Ability to plan, organize and complete work assignments independently.
  • Possesses organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time and meet deadlines.
  • Agrees to adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A valid Florida Driver’s License and reliable transportation is required.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and climb on small ladders. 
  • Incumbent is required to remain tobacco-free during the course of their employment in this position.
  • Incumbent will need to maintain flexible schedule to accommodate some evening and weekend hours.
  • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. Will need to maintain flexible schedule to accommodate some evening and weekend hours.

 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a United States accredited college or university.
  • One-year of experience in public health, community health, or health education.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (both verbal and written).
