Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a motivated individual to serve as a Corrections Industry Lead Worker in the Garment Shop at Menard Correctional Center. The successful candidate will maintain inventories, ensure quality control, and maintain safety. Additionally, the successful candidate will supervise individuals in custody and conduct on-the-job training. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.

Job Responsibilities

  • Trains, assigns, and instructs individual in custody workers in the daily operations and production of commodities at the Menard Correctional Industries Unit.
  • Maintains operating records of production.
  • Inspects finished products for quality control prior to packaging and shipping of finished goods.
  • Maintains proper preventative maintenance on all equipment.
  • Maintains all Department and institutional safety, security, and sanitation procedures are followed.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires three (3) years of specialized industrial experience related to the position to be filled.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least three (3) years of experience in the various types of production with raw materials.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience maintaining workflow in a group setting.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in inventory management.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in management of tools in a correctional setting.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience maintaining production schedules.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in shipping and receiving procedures.
  • Prefers Forklift certification.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
