The Molecular Virology Technologist II position provides specialized laboratory services in the Virology/Serology Unit of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health (NCSLPH). This role involves performing a broad range of advanced molecular-based diagnostic and surveillance testing for viral pathogens, with an emphasis on respiratory and vaccine-preventable diseases. Procedures include real-time PCR and other advanced molecular detection techniques executed in compliance with CLIA regulations and internal quality assurance standards.

This position supports public health operations through the timely detection and characterization of infectious disease agents, contributing to statewide surveillance, outbreak investigations, and public health decision-making. The role includes technical leadership responsibilities such as mentoring laboratory staff and participating in the evaluation and implementation of new methods and instrumentation.

Key Duties Include

  • Perform clinical and surveillance testing on viral pathogens
  • Operate a range of instrumentation for advanced molecular diagnostics including real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR ) platforms
  • Analyze, review, and report test results in accordance with QA protocols and LIMS
  • Conduct quality control procedures and participate in instrument maintenance per manufacturer and lab protocol
  • Perform validation and verification of test methods and related equipment
  • Provide cross-training and technical instruction to laboratory staff and trainees.
  • Participate in emergency response efforts including surge testing and lab operations support.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness and ensure proper inventory of reagents and supplies.
  • Adhere to biosafety standards and proper use of personal protective equipment in BSL-2 /BSL-3 conditions.
  • Assist with staff competency assessments and proficiency testing.
