This position is located in Wilson, North Carolina.

The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school serving the 54 easternmost counties that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf and hard of hearing students, kindergarten through 12th grade, following a typical school calendar.  The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language.   A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County.  The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.


 The primary role of the Residential Life Trainer (RLT) involves active involvement in the intentional care, supervision, and overall welfare of the students participating in the ENCSD Boarding Program.   Duties of an RLT include direct supervision of students while in dormitory/on campus facilities, ensuring safety of all boarding students in designated care, participation in transportation routes as both a monitor and/or driver, and involvement in student community outings and field trips.  In addition, Residential Life Trainers will maintain involvement with students during the afternoons to aid in activities such as homework, leisure-recreation activities, and daily living skills (e.g., eating, personal care, dressing, etc.).  RLTs will assist students in practicing appropriate social-emotional skills, plan activities that promote student development, and model positive behavior for students.  This position is also responsible for maintaining records, following/implementing policies and procedures, and other duties as assigned. The Residential Life Trainer may also aid students who have additional needs, such as those related to additional disabilities and/or behavior challenges. This position may also be called upon based upon a staff rotation list to assist with weekend transportation and field trips to assure the safety of the students.
 

 


These positions follow a 10-month school Calendar and pays a 10% shift differential for all hours worked on 2nd or 3rd shift. 

Shift assignments are based on business needs and can be altered throughout the school year.


Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of guiding, training and caring for children, youth and/or adults with one or more disabilities.

Work demonstrating an understanding of the personal and social problems of children, youth and/or adults with disabilities and in exercising judgment in assessing, observing, and recording progress, participation, and/or demonstrated skills and abilities of clients.


Management preference:  

Ability to communicate using American Sign Language or willingness to learn.

Note on Education and Experience Equivalency:

Equivalency can go both ways. If a job has a minimum education and experience of associate degree and two years’ experience, someone with a bachelor's degree could qualify.


High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in an age appropriate childcare setting or a goal-oriented setting; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must have a NCDL or be able to obtain.

Applicants seeking National Guard preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS) if they are a current member of the NC National Guard. If an applicant is a former NC National Guard Member who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions, they must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22 along with their State application.

Applicants with degrees not conferred at a United States college or university must attach a degree verification that their degree is equivalent to a similar degree form a US institution.
