What are the responsibilities and job description for the Food Service Specialist position at State of OK JD McCarty Center?

J.D. McCarty Center is looking for a Food Service Specialist to join our team in Norman, OK. The Food Service Specialist will provide and assistance and support in the nutritional services department to help ensure the dietary needs are met for our disabled and developmentally challenged pediatric patients, birth to 21.

The ideal candidate is dependable, reliable, punctual, and enjoys helping others. This person must follow proper dress and hygiene protocols for a kitchen environment. This person must be able to effectively communicate with the dietary team, so quality of service delivered strives to be excellent. 

Pay: $15.00 per hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Operates the dish-machine according to the proper procedure. Keeps area in the Main Facility, Dietary, and School area clear of dirty dishes and hand washes items when necessary. Maintains temperature and sanitizer log in all dish room areas daily. Assists with catering to include preparation, serving, and cleaning dishes.
  • Completes cleaning as assigned by daily/weekly schedules to include but not limited to: cleaning the main kitchen and dish room; school's kitchen and dish room; catering area, sweeping and mopping floors, sanitizing all surfaces, etc. Maintains a clean work area on a daily basis to include sanitation and organization of work area and daily wiping of walls.
  • Assists with food preparation in the main, school, and catering kitchens and dishing of servings to include but not limited to: plating food, preparation of food - chopping, pureeing, proper food temperatures, etc. Prepare patient trays for meals which include appropriate adaptive equipment.
  • Organize, transport and routinely stock deliveries for school and hospital units. Delivers breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals to hospital units and school. Assists with the school meal set-up and serving of the meal. Cleans up the lunchroom at the school when required. Transports the meals to the group homes by loading cambro, transporting, and delivering the meals.
  • Assists in the implementation of the established inventory and delivery system. To include inspection of items upon delivery, document acceptance, rotate and date stock based on the FIFO method (First In First Out). In the absence of the Nutrition Assistant, serves as back-up for snack preparation and delivery to the school and hospital units.
  • Assists the Kitchen Manager with quality assurance data collection which include: inventory, food cost, meal count, dating inventory, etc.
  • Maintain any required specialized training. Demonstrates safety awareness during entire shift and while performing assigned tasks to include appropriate lifting techniques, awareness of surroundings, using equipment properly, following policy guidelines when lifting and using proper body mechanics. Follows all policies and procedures relating to kitchen safety and sanitation 100% of the time. Follows and complies with department policy for lifting up to 25 pounds and obtains assistance for weights over 25 pounds. Follows infection control policy, procedures, and guidelines by using proper hand-washing techniques and maintaining good personal hygiene.

 Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Previous hospital, institutional, or commercial experience preferred
  • Educational background in nutrition, inventory, or food service
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Must be able to lift, push, or pull 25 pounds
  • Must have a valid drivers license
  • References required

About J.D. McCarty Center:

J.D. McCarty Center is a pediatric rehabilitation hospital for children with disabilities birth to 21 years of age. We are a unique 36 bed hospital. Patient are admitted for a 30-day evaluation during which they are assigned a treatment team consisting of nursing unit, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutritional services, social services, psychological services, behavioral analysis, and recreational therapy. Our 80-acres campus includes a on-site elementary, intermediate, and high school which is staffed by Norman Public School teachers. Patients may continue treatment needs beyond the 30-days as an in-patient in habilitation status based upon progress or placement needs.
