What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pharmacy Technician position at State of Utah?

This position supports the Medicaid Pharmacy program in the Division of Integrated Healthcare. The employee shall:

  • Handle inbound faxes and telephone calls from providers and members regarding prior authorizations by screening and reviewing requests in accordance with Utah Medicaid Policies.
  • Provide information to key stakeholders regarding a member’s pharmacy drug coverage and provide accurate procedures for pharmacy prior authorizations.
  • Provide interpretation or clarification of pharmacy policy.
  • Pro-actively address, research and resolve issues while maintaining accurate and complete documentation of all inquiries for continuous improvement.
  • Help with the maintenance of pharmacy policy manuals, State Plan Amendments, Rules, Medicaid Information Bulletin, reports, memorandums, and other documents.
Hours will be Monday - Friday, 11:30 am to 8 pm.  Training will occur in the office during business hours, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Our ideal candidateis a certified pharmacy technician with five or more years of experience as a certified pharmacy technician. The candidate should possess a deep knowledge of pharmacy claims processing systems, prior authorization review, and call center experience. In addition to strong interpersonal skills, the candidate should be self-motivated with the ability to work in a fast-paced production environment. Strong skills in written and verbal communication, critical thinking, data entry, 10-key, and basic computer proficiency is essential. It is preferred that candidates have experience working with the Medi-Span classification of drugs, Microsoft Office and Google products, and have extensive knowledge of the Utah Medicaid program. 


Note: as of April 8, 2024, DHHS employees will be working a hybrid schedule, which includes 2 office days per week and 3 telework days.

  • Will receive and respond to incoming phone calls to support pharmacy prior authorization.
  • Will process incoming pharmacy prior authorization requests, evaluate requests for completeness, gather data to support prior authorization processing, and perform outreach to providers as needed.
  • Provides customers with information concerning rights, options, services, goals and expectations.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
  • Receives, researches and responds to incoming questions or complaints, provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution.
  • Decides upon the need for additional data, information, etc., and authorizes the means necessary to obtain the required information.
  • Refers providers and member to other available services to meet needs where appropriate.
  • Enters data into a computer system and retrieves, corrects, or deletes previously entered data.
  • Acts as a resource to team members, participates in team and professional meetings and gives input as to needs of members.
  • Provides information concerning medications to physicians, patients, nurses and other staff.
  • Prepares reports outlining medicinal and drug usage patterns.
  • Writes or drafts correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
  • Maintains Medicaid Pharmacy program website. 
  • Maintains drug rebate conversion factors between HCPCS codes, National Drug Codes and federal Unit Rebates for drug rebate invoicing. 
  • Performs software and systems testing for pharmacy and Medicaid applications.

  • requires licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Utah
  • knowledge of National Drug Code system
  • knowledge of the Medi-Span drug classification system
  • knowledge of interactions and adverse reactions of drugs, medications and their dosage

  • knowledge of Medicaid programs
  • skill and ability to take accurate meeting minutes
  • skill and ability to provide consultation and/or expert advice
  • skill and ability to write program related articles

  • Effective July 1, 2021, State of Utah Employees must either reside in Utah or be in the process of relocating to within 30 days of their start date.
  • This position may currently be a hybrid of both in-office and remote work days. Please note, a position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion, at any time and for any reason.
  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • This position will work Monday through Friday, 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
