The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Full-Time Recreation & Athletic Specialist 4 at Stafford Creek Corrections Center, located in Aberdeen, WA (This position is not represented by a union).

AGENCY PROFILE:
The Department of Corrections, as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law, and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State. The Department consists of the Office of the Secretary, Prisons Division, Community Corrections Division, Administrative Services Division, and Health Services. The Department employs over 7,600 staff and has a biennial budget of approximately $1.6 billion.

Stafford Creek Corrections Center is a 1,936-bed multi-custody facility located five miles west of Aberdeen, on the southern Washington Coast. There are seven living units for medium and minimum long-term custody incarcerated individuals and an intensive management unit for maximum-custody incarcerated individuals.

Duties

At Stafford Creek Corrections Center (SCCC), an adult correctional facility, this position plans, organizes, and directs the recreation program in support of the Department of Corrections' (DOC) mission to improve public safety by positively changing lives. The SCCC Recreation Department collaborates with stakeholders to enhance safety and prepare incarcerated individuals for release. The Recreation program accomplishes this by offering and organizing programs and activities that reduce idleness, hold incarcerated individuals accountable, enhance their prosocial skills, health, and wellness.


  • Plans, organizes, and directs the institution's recreation program to include intramural athletic, fitness, music, hobby programs, special events, and living unit tournaments. Coordinates the availability of these program services appropriately in the gymnasium, outside yards, visiting rooms and living units. lllicits feedback from staff and incarcerated individuals about current and prospective programs. Reviews and provides input about program ideas that are presented by administration, staff, and
    incarcerated individuals. Develops a budqet for equipment, supplies and facilities. Oversees ordering of all recreation equipment/supplies, including living unit recreation supplies (i.e. games, puzzles).
  • Supervises, trains and evaluates two (2) Recreation and Athletic Specialist 3s. Also works in coalition with two (2) Correctional Officer 3s to facilitate the supervision of twelve (12) Correctional Officer 2s in the recreation areas. Develops work schedules for all subordinate recreation stpff and incarcerated recreation assistants to commensurate with institution needs. Assigns specific complex duties to
    individual staff. Interviews, hires, and terminates incarcerated recreation assistants as needed. Develops incarcerated individuals' work assignments within the recreation program and evaluates job performance as appropriate. Supervises intramural athletic, weightlifting, fitness, music, hobby programs, special events, and living unit tournaments. Makes sure all recreational activities are conducted in a safe and secure manner. Encourages sportsmanship and positive interactions between program participants. Educates participants with regards to the rules of the sports and
    activities offered. Provides health and wellness information to participants when requested. Writes behavior log entries for program participants as needed. As needed, performs tasks and duties normally assigned to Recreation and Athletics Specialist 3 when they are on leave or away from the institution.
  • Consults with case management staff, collectively and individually, to identify specific incarcerated individual needs, treatment, and rehabilitation goals and how to achieve them through recreation sources. Provides guidance and counseling to incarcerated individuals with regards to recreation programs, policies, and procedures. Meets regularly with representatives of the custody department to identify and carry out security procedures relative to use of facilities and equipment. Meets with the
    expanded institution management team to coordinate delivery of programs. Submits work orders to engineering staff as needed. Submits help requests to IT as needed. Coordinates and plans programs with religious, education, and community involvement program supervisors. Conducts resolution and tort claim investigations when requested by administrative staff. Drafts responses to incarcerated individual inquiries for administrative staff as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains liaison with community representatives and organizations who may benefit the recreation program. Assists in the coordination and delivery of donations to the community.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School education
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree in Recreation Management or associated 4 year college degree.
  • Supervisory/management experience with various areas of Recreational Programming. To include but not limited to:
    • Intramural Athletics (training and supervision of referees, umpires, and various officials), Fitness Programs, Weight Rooms, Curio Programs, Musical Programs, Hobby Shops (may include but not limited to ceramics, wood, and various leather working activities).
  • Experience within a prison or other institutional setting.
  • Experience working with a challenging or difficult population.
  • Experience managing budget's.
  • Experience with the direct supervision of subordinate staff.
