POSITION SUMMARY
This position assists the Assistant Director of Financial Aid in the administration of the various federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs as prescribed by federal and state regulations and the institutional polices. The Financial Aid Specialist also assists in responsibility for processing student financial aid by maintaining documentation used to determine student eligibility for grants, scholarships, college work-study and loan programs. These programs provide students the financial assistance to attend college and attain their educational goal. This is a 12 month position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
To perform this position successfully, employee must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Provide counseling to students and parents regarding federal financial aid policies as well as other state and institutional aid policies and availability.
  • Administer the federal work-study program on campus, including placement of students, completion of employment documents, and monitoring of appropriate work ethic.
  • Assist in the administration of the State Aid Programs, including A , Access Missouri, and Bright Flight, in accordance with regulations from the State. This includes determining eligibility, requesting funds, and balancing with the Business Office.
  • Process and administer the Federal Pell Grant in accordance with regulations from the US Department of Education.
  • Coordinate with other offices to prepare and submit monthly enrollment reporting.
  • Responsible for ensuring all graduates meet exit counseling requirements prior to graduation and placing and removing holds on student accounts.
  • Perform verification of tax and other documents on selected students.
  • Maintain current knowledge on federal and state program regulations.
  • Assist with the maintenance, installation, and upgrade of computerized financial aid programs.
  • Attend training workshops provided by agencies that administer state and federal financial aid.
  • Maintain electronic records of student financial aid documentation.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Financial Aid with special projects as required.
  • Perform other related duties as needed or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
  • An Associate of Applied Science degree in the area of business administration and/or accounting is preferred. Three to five years of varied financial aid experience or comparable experience may be accepted. A combination of education and experience may be used.
  • Ability to effectively present financial aid information to students and parents.
  • Ability to develop expertise of the institutional student information system, document imaging system, and financial aid awarding system.
  • Experience with financial documentation preferred.
  • Above average computer operation skills.
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of federal tax documents.
  • Strong interpersonal and human relations skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to self-motivate.
  • Ability to use diplomacy and tact when resolving problems.
  • Ability to identify problems and determine the best course of action for their resolution.
  • Ability to critically evaluate information for accuracy and usefulness in solving problems.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex policies and procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close or/and long vision.
