A Brief Overview

The PET/CT Imaging Technologist is responsible for providing patient care and technical skills in the operation of a positron emission tomography (PET)/ computed tomography (CT) scanner under the direction of the physician to obtain data for use by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Education Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Nuclear Medicine Technology or equal years of experience. Required

Experience Qualifications

  • Previous experience with PET/CT and/or CT equipment and procedures. Required

Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of and ability to perform required operations in quality control, radiation safety, patient handling, and related aspects of medical imaging. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Nuclear Medicine Technlongist - NMTCB Valid Kansas License or eligible must be obtained. Required or
  • Nuclear Medicine Technology - ARRT Valid Kansas License or eligible must be obtained. Required
  • Basic Life Support - BLS Required within 90 days.

What you will do

  • Independently performs medical imaging procedures as needed for the diagnosis and treatment of patient illness as prescribed by physician.
  • Properly identifies patient; explains the procedure to the patient; prepares patient for the procedure. Observes the physical condition of the patient during and after the procedure; administers or procures care as needed. Assures proper measures for dealing with reactions to injected contrast, isotopes and other materials.
  • Positions and immobilizes patient on table, using supportive devises to obtain precise patient position and following protocols specified by the medical director.
  • Prepares radiopharmaceutical materials, calculates doses, and administers doses, under direction of physician.
  • Instructs patients as needed concerning radiation safety, home preparation for imaging studies, and related matters.
  • Properly documents in EMR.
  • Sets up equipment, instruments, isotopes, contrast materials, and apparatus required for imaging studies.
  • Performs quality control procedures necessary to assure the accuracy of each test system including daily survey meter check, dose calibrator constancy, wipe counter calibration, CT scanner QC, and/or PET scanner QC.
  • Measures radioactivity, using Geiger counters, scalers, and scintillation detectors.
  • Performs, or schedules for performance, preventive maintenance of equipment.
  • Enters data such as type of scan requested, slice thickness, scan time, and other technical data into computer. Starts CT scanner to scan designated anatomical area of patient. Talks to patient over intercom system and observes patient to monitor patient safety and comfort.
  • Operates PET/CT and/or CT equipment and related equipment and instruments in performing quality imaging studies.
  • Recognizes and initiates investigation into problems with clinical procedures; consults management regarding unsolved problems.
  • Follows established rules, regulations and safety procedures established by the NRC and state licensing agencies including all procedures for handling radioactive materials if appropriate; F18-FDG package survey, F18-FDG calibration and documentation.
  • Follows radiation safety techniques in use and disposal of radioactive materials.
