TITLE: Teacher Assistant
REPORTS TO: Supervising Teacher and Principal
LENGTH OF CONTRACT OR WORK YEAR: 9 months (187 days)
SUMMARY: The Teacher Assistant provides support to the classroom teacher and reinforces lessons by tutoring individual students or small groups.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in improving students’ skills in all academic areas as directed by the teacher.
- Promotes a positive image of the school district program to the public.
- Keeps records as directed by the teacher.
- Attends parent-teacher conferences as directed by the teacher.
- Exhibits high expectations for self and students.
- Demonstrates continued growth by participation in professional development activities.
- Adheres to all safety procedures, rules, and policies to ensure the well-being of all students.
- Reports regularly and punctually to assigned work location and notifies principal or designee of impending absence in a timely manner.
- Maintains active supervision of students during all work and duty assignments.
- Maintains confidentiality of all student information.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the teacher and/or principal.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have completed at least 2 years of study (48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education; or
- Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
- Met a rigorous standard of quality as determined by a formal assessment. (Mississippi Test: ACT WorkKeys - Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Writing Subtests).
- For Pre-K, must have and Early Childhood Associate’s degree or an Associate’s degree with 12 Early Childhood college credit hours.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Environment: Standard office and school settings to include classrooms, gyms, libraries, cafeterias, and recreational areas; moderate travel; exposure to potentially stressful environments; regularly perform inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Physical: Sufficient physical ability to perform moderate lifting up to 25 pounds; regularly required to walk, sit or stand for prolonged periods of time; may require climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction; the noise level in the work environment is moderate.
