What are the responsibilities and job description for the BRAVE Officer position at Summa Health?

Full-time, 32 hours

Summary:

Protects patients, visitors, employees and hospital property by rounding in assigned areas on the behavioral health units/floors, engaging patients and promoting a safe and therapeutic environment while enforcing hospital policies. Actively promotes the following: non-violence and non-coercive practices, patient service excellence through trauma sensitive responses and increased employee satisfaction through reduced staff fear and tension. Participates in creating a nonviolent community management system with staff and patients through education and role modeling of verbal and nonverbal interventions and techniques.



Minimum Qualifications:

1. Formal Education Required:
a. High school diploma or equivalent
b. Associate Degree preferred

2. Experience & Training Required:
a. Successful completion of the OPOTA Private Security academy and/or OPOTA 20 Hour Private Security Firearms Certification or OPOTA Basic Police Academy
b. Must be 21 years of age or over at time of hire.
c. Must maintain active and current certifications in firearms to department and OPOTA standard.
d. Must maintain active and current certification in Conducted Electrical Weapon to department standard.
e. Non Violent Crisis Intervention Instructor within 1 year of appointment
f. Experienced in being skillfully involved in tension reduction strategies needed for individual and group patient de-escalation.
g. Experienced with handling aggressive, cognitively impaired and/or persons with behavioral health problems
h. Honorable discharge from military service can be substituted for related work experience.
i. Completion of coursework in higher education in a related field can be substituted for some or all required work experience.

3. Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
a. Ability to perform functions requiring running, walking, physical restraint of others.
b. Demonstrates excellent engagement skills with patients, visitors and staff as a cooperative team player
c. Ability to instruct and interact in small and large groups, excluding formal therapy groups
d. Maintain proficiency with firearms and self-defense techniques
e. Must be able to safely use defensive weapons and tools (as approved) and practices of safe nonviolent containment during assaultive situations
f. Maintenance of proficiency with firearms and self-defense techniques.
g. Required to carry firearm within the scope of their duties
h. Obtains the provided training and certification and required to carry a Conducted Electrical Weapon with the scope of their duties.
i. Required to operate handheld and walk through metal detectors.
j. Ability to operate computers, copiers, and other business machines
k. Ability to accurately collect and complete data entry
l. Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient records and any unit event as a Summa Health System patient privacy requirement
m. Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity.
n. Preferred to have a valid Ohio Driver’s License and meet Summa Fleet Insurance Standards, but not required.
o. Obtains the provided training and certification for NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) training within the first six months of hire and annually thereafter.

4. Level of Physical Demands:
a. Very heavy: exerts in excess of 100 pounds occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force continuously to move objects.

Salary : $35,400 - $44,900
