What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Assistant position at Suncoast Skin Solutions?
The Laboratory Assistant position is an entry level position for an individual with prior laboratory experience preferred. The individual will perform routine and limited non-routine functions to aid in the preparation of histopathology samples. The Shift will start at 4:00 am for training. After training the shift will change to 3:00 am to 11:30 am with a 30 minute lunch.
Essential Functions
Clinical and Administrative
· Under general supervision and according to policies and procedures, perform routine and limited non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides, for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s).
· Receive/collect, label, and prepare tissue specimens for gross dissection.
· Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
· Monitor inventory, requisition and order supplies prior to depletion, stock and maintain laboratory supplies.
· May run and/or monitor pending lists.
· May generate and maintain department statistics.
· Operate, clean, and sterilize laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments. Maintain a clean workstation in the grossing area.
· Prepare reagents for tissue processing and routine slide staining, under direct supervision.
· Perform routine H&E staining either manually or automated.
· Perform coverslipping of stained slides either manually or automated.
· Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
· With appropriate education and training, may assist technical staff with limited technical functions
· Responsible for all assigned clerical duties associated with the Histology laboratory.
· Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information concerning patients, physicians, employees, clients, vendors, and the Company.
· Ensure all safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.
· Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA regulations.
· Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
· Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
1. AA Degree or higher
2. Excellent verbal communication skills and customer service skills
3. Basic knowledge of operating non-complex instrumentation
4. Must be able to handle working an early shift 5am to 1pm
5. Reliable transportation
6. Knowledgeable in computer programs and EMR systems
Preferred
1. College level science courses combination of 6 and 12 hours of either biology and chemistry.
2. 3 years of histopathology or other laboratory experience, including providing support to pathologists.
3. 1 year of histopathology or other laboratory experience preferred.
4. 1 year of experience handling PHI and other patient information using an LIS preferred.
