Essential Purpose Of This Position

The primary role of the Engineering Manager is to lead and manage a broad range of Engineering Services for the Communications division, including applications engineering, customer technical support and troubleshooting, development and delivery of training for customers and end-users, development of installation guidelines and other technical product information, and act as a subject matter expert (SME) for use and installation of all Communications Division products.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintain current knowledge of all products and standards to maintain and/or develop subject matter expert status within the Engineering Services organization.
  • Customer interface at all levels, as well as contractors, inspectors, and specifying engineers in the installation and use of all Communications Division products.
  • Leadership role in the resolution of customer complaints or claims.
  • Manage technical support response to internal and external customers through a variety of media.
  • Manage participation in relevant industry standards bodies (TIA, ICEA) and communicate new or changed product requirements or standards to the SEI organization.
  • Actively coordinate customer response and support priorities with Sales and Marketing.
  • Actively seek to recognize and implement needed initiatives for improving engineering support and processes.
  • Provide applications input and approvals for product development project reviews and engineering changes.
  • Provide organizational support to Sales and Marketing at select trade shows and conferences.
  • Develop and deliver product-related training and install recommendations for internal and external customers.
  • Develop and deliver technical product information to support sales and marketing initiatives.
  • Ensure that product applications guidelines, installation documentation, and supporting technical information are written and available through various media.
  • Manage the objectives, priorities, and travel for all direct reports.

Skills And Abilities Required

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Advanced knowledge and competencies with regards to OSP and premises cabling applications, including cable and associated hardware/accessories for all product families.
  • Ability to provide leadership to manufacturing, product development, and quality assurance in the resolution of field issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand new product technologies, applications, and standards.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with customers across a range of circumstances.
  • Ability to accommodate expected travel at the 25-50% level to customer locations, Superior Essex manufacturing facilities, and trade shows.

Education And Experience Requirements

  • Technical/Engineering degree preferred, but consideration for significant experience in field operations, customer technical support, or cable installation methods will be given.
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience working with communications cable products, hardware, and accessories, including both copper and optical fiber OSP premises cable. Must have relevant field experience working with craft personnel, contractors, and specifying engineers.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of industry performance and installation standards for copper and fiber optic outside plant and premises products.

Licenses Or Certifications

  • Premises and/or Outside Plant network certification preferred.

Computer Equipment And Software Requirements

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Knowledgeable in the use and interpretation of results from field test equipment used to determine the acceptability of communications cable products.
