OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY: Accurately verifies all preoperative requirements for patients. Assesses, plans, implements, and coordinates care for the patient prior to surgery and/or procedures. Responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes through implementation of critical pathways.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of one-year experience as Pre-Admissions RN.

Associate’s degree from an accredited two-year college or university, or diploma in nursing.

BSN desired.

Possession of valid state license as Registered Nurse in the state of Kansas.

Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required. (NOTE: BCLS may be obtained individually, or will be accepted without individual BCLS card with current ACLS documentation.)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Gathers information on the patient including all test performed such as lab, EKG, chest x-ray, Echo, Stress, heart catheterization, clearances, PFTs.
- Demonstrates ability to interpret and report abnormal tests.
- Performs a complete history and physical on the phone or in person and evaluate and report when necessary to the anesthesiologist or surgeon.
- Gather a complete list of patient’s medications including the dosage and frequency medication is taken. Have knowledge of drug use and interaction of drugs with anesthesia agents.
- Communicates with anesthesiologist, surgeons, midlevels, surgeons’ offices, PCP and specialists’ offices.
- Communicates with patients and family members.
- Follows up with test results, physicians’ offices and patients.
- Demonstrates good computer skills and phone etiquette.
- Teaches and provides instructions to patients regarding medications, details regarding procedure, expectations from arrival to dismissal including post-op care and pain management.
- Demonstrates knowledge regarding cultural difference and age specific needs.
- Completes all documentation to ensure availability of accurate and up to date information on day of surgery.
- Documents the patient’s medical history, including a complete list of all medications, a complete medical history, and all tests completed for this surgery.
- Ensures patient meets admit requirements before patient goes for surgery or for procedures.
- Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
- Adheres to established hospital safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Demonstrates the importance of continuing education to the performance of hospital responsibilities and growth in profession.
- Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care.
- Interacts with all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional hospital environment.
- Participates on committees and contributes to quality improvement process.
- Actively protects patient and self by following OSHA and other standards reviewed in annual training.
