SEC Mission and Vision: First opened as The Women’s Center on November 2, 1972, in Carbondale, Illinois, the Center is one of the very first domestic violence shelters in the nation. As the Center grew, the geographic service areas expanded, and we now service Jackson County, as well as Franklin, Gallatin, Johnson, Perry, Saline, Union, and Williamson counties. The Center’s mission and vision are inclusive of all marginalized communities including LGBTQ individuals, and supportive of a woman’s right to determine her own healthcare decisions. The Director of Development will plan and implement a development and fundraising program to provide for the short-term and long-term needs of the organization, including but not limited to major gifts, planned-giving, endowment development, annual appeals and events.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and Event and/or Development Committees to determine the developmental goals of the organization as determined by the mission, vision, and priorities set by the Board of Directors.
- Establish fundraising and development objectives for the Survivor Empowerment Center, setting appropriate goals aligned with organizational strategic planning and in cooperation with the Executive Director.
- Maintain a list of potential financial donors including corporations, foundations, and individuals.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major donors and projects with the assistance of the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and other key staff.
- Prepare monthly progress reports and attend staff meetings, as well as Events and Development committee meetings, as well meetings of the Board of Directors as necessary.
- Produce relevant and informative fundraising literature for distribution to previous donors and the public, including direct mail and electronic appeals.
- Research potential sources of, and assist and/or oversee application for, grants and public/private funding as directed.
- Oversee the fundraising process and maintain records of receipts and disbursements of funds in relation to the fundraising process.
- Oversee and assist the Events Committee of the Board of Directors with major fundraising events and other events as requested by the Executive Director that effectively communicate the purposes of the organization.
- Maintain donor database(s) for the purpose of donor development, strategic asks, minimizing donor fatigue, and ensuring donor commitments are met.
Required Competencies:
- Extensive knowledge of development and fundraising strategies and principles.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent innterpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of tax planning and estate planning principles and techniques that favor charitable giving.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and implement a strategic development plan.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
- Must have current driver’s license, vehicle, and maintain personal automobile insurance.
- Commitment to the mission, vision, and priorities of the Survivor Empowerment Center, its constituencies and clients.
- Ability to work collegially with diverse populations regardless of racial identity, ethnicity, socioeconomic or cultural background, political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or those who are differently-abled.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent prior experience with preference for those with degrees and/or experience in Finance, Accounting, Business, or Non-Profit Management.
- Five years of experience in development for a non-profit organization.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master's degree preferred in Finance, Accounting, Business, or Non-Profit Management.
- Ten years of experience in development for a non-profit organization is highly preferred.
