What are the responsibilities and job description for the DV Advocate-CHERISH Late Life Program position at Susan B. Anthony Project?
Summary: The Domestic Violence Advocate provides sound emotional support and information to women and men victims/survivors of domestic violence, age 60 , facilitates healing for domestic violence victims/survivors, and acts as an advocate in cooperation with Department of Social Services (DSS) Case Managers for the CHERISH Late Life Program
Employees who are required to be certified to provide direct service to clients under the CGS 52-146K and the managers to these employees, are considered essential personnel. Their classification as essential personnel requires coverage of critical crisis services and residential presence during all shifts; daytime, nights, overnights, weekends, holidays, storms and other emergency situations.
Responsibilities:
- Establish a file for each client service utilizing the intake packet and update progress/care plan to assure that clients are actively working toward goals progress in conjunction with DSS case manager and SBAP Advocate
- Assist client in developing an individualized safety plan
- Pursue and establish partnerships with assisted living places, nursing homes, VNA, and other institutions serving this population
- Work with assisted living organizations or domestic violence safe living programs to provide shelter for late life victims at risk of violence utilizing a danger assessment whenever possible
- Meet with clients, in home, at a safe home, or facility to provide advocacy and support services
- Provide individual and group counseling, emotional support, and options to victims/survivors and their families and to make referrals when necessary/appropriate
- Accompany adult victims/survivors to a hospital or private physician, police and/or court when requested. Provide advocacy and/or emotional support upon victim's/survivor’s request
- Make regular contact with community organizations/service providers to assure effective referrals
- Coordinate with other staff to provide crisis line coverage 24/7/365 and be available for after-hours shifts as required, including nights, weekends and holidays
- Keep informed of all services, referral resources, legislation, and policies regarding victims/survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
- Assist in assessing needs for and designing and implementing support groups for victims/survivors and/or their families
- Provide application and information and support for Victim Compensation funds
- Maintain and provide service data/statistics and narratives, as required
- Assist with community education as needed and provide in-services as requested
- Participate in individual and group supervision, including advocate meetings
- Act as an ambassador for Susan B. Anthony Project. Participate in events, programs and promotions of awareness and advocacy
- Travel within service area to accomplish duties of position
- Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the agency
Qualifications:
- Education and experience that may have been gained through relevant training, employment, or volunteer experience
- Certification as a DV/SA counselor per statute
- Knowledge of counseling and social services
- Ability to understand and incorporate the dynamics of domestic and sexual violence into work
- Excellent problem solving and follow up skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Platform, and/or other programs
- Ability to participate as a member of a team to enhance agency communication and operation
- Use of positive communications and proactive conflict resolution
- Ability to work with other agencies, systems, board and volunteers
- Daily access to a car with a valid CT driver’s license
- Ability to lift and move 25 pounds
- Patience and a sense of humor
