Job Description

The academic advisor plays a vital role in supporting the academic success of a cohort of undergraduate students in the Whitman School of Management. This position provides comprehensive academic advising which includes program planning, choice of major(s), course selection, academic rules and regulations, study abroad options, and academic opportunities to enhance the undergraduate experience, ensure timely degree completion, and support retention efforts. This role requires a strong commitment to student support, excellence communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.

This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU, Local 200United.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree with 2-3 years of experience in academic advising at the college-level is preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, excellent technical skills (examples include PeopleSoft, DegreeWorks, and database programs).
  • Strong detail orientation and excellent organizational skills required.
  • Must be collegial and able to deal with potential stressful situations.
  • Experience working in large undergraduate student advising office is highly desirable.
  • Proactiveness, proclivity for solving problems and ability to display a customer-orientation are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Advise students in specific curriculum decisions including the choice and scheduling of courses, selection and change of majors and minors, providing referrals to specific departments, schools or colleges as appropriate.
  • Support a cohort of students and advise on complex academic and personal issues, making referrals when needed.
  • Advising sessions are primarily one-on-one with some group sessions.
  • Oversee all administrative tasks associated with assigned students including semester degree checks, rising senior audits, degree certifications, athletic certifications, flag maintenance, incoming first year registration, and daily intake of student forms.
  • Understand, interpret, and provide rationale for SU and Whitman academic policies and procedures to students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Utilize campus-wide software and additional technology platforms to track academic progress /degree completion and communicate with students and faculty regarding student success.
  • Promote and engage in extracurricular involvement on campus for the IMPRESS program.
