Job Description
The Renée Crown University Honors Program seeks to hire an Academic Advisor to meet the academic needs of Honors students and programmatic needs of the program. This position reports to the Assistant Director of the Honors Program. The position advises Honors students – among the University’s most outstanding undergraduates – on the Honors curriculum and program requirements (including the Honors Thesis) and on general academic challenges and opportunities.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s and research experience preferred. 1-5 years of experience in academic advising preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications
- Must be an excellent communicator; a dedicated mentor; collegial in working with faculty and staff members engaged in mutual projects supporting students. Must have the wide-ranging general knowledge necessary to advise undergraduate students in a variety of academic and pre-professional fields; extensive knowledge of University curricula, advising, and administrative processes. Adept with understanding and communicating research at the undergraduate level; proficient in MS Office, including MS Access; WordPress, and contemporary and evolving social media platforms.
Responsibilities
General Honors Advising:
Help students coordinate Honors requirements with major requirements; career mentoring; post-graduate education counseling; explore internships and networking options with students; help undecided/exploring students think through alternatives and devise a plan to select a major; work as part of the team keeping student records accurate and up to date in the Honors database;
help students manage academic stress.
Mentor 40% of Thesis juniors and seniors on Thesis progress. Help students: generate topics that map to student interests and strengths; approach potential Thesis Advisors; craft strong Proposals and Updates; troubleshoot problems; complete IRB process, where appropriate; track their progress to successful completion.
Academic Coursework Administration and Communication:
Help students coordinate Honors requirements with major requirements; career mentoring; post-graduate education counseling; explore internships and networking options with students; help undecided/exploring students think through alternatives and devise a plan to select a major; work as part of the team keeping student records accurate and up to date in the Honors database;
help students manage academic stress.

Academic Coursework Administration and Communication:
- Schedule and manage on MySlice/Peoplesoft approximately 75 HNR prefix Honors courses and wait lists per year, including student permissions.
- Evaluate course syllabi for possible fulfillment of Honors requirements and interact with faculty to request clarification of syllabi when needed.
- Coordinate and communicate with Registrar, and school and college representatives regarding summer registration.
- Communicate regularly with schools and colleges throughout the summer course selection period regarding Honors course demand and availability.
- Update the Honors website with current course information.
Civic Engagement Advising:
- Help students coordinate civic engagement requirement with Honors and degree program requirements.
- Collaborate with the university’s civic engagement offices/units to identify opportunities for students.
- Maintain accurate and up to date records of students civic engagement hours.
- Update the Honors website with current civic engagement information.
Other duties as assigned.
