What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Resource Officer position at Tate Elementary School?
The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a sworn law enforcement officer assigned to a specific school for the primary purpose of maintaining safety and security on campus. The SRO will act as a mentor to students, balancing a role as both a security presence and a positive community figure within the school environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Patrol school grounds and buildings to deter criminal activity and identify potential threats.
- Investigate criminal incidents reported on school property, including but not limited to theft, assault, drug/weapon possession and vandalism.
- Respond to emergency situations and coordinate with other first responders.
- Work collaboratively with school administrators, local law enforcement and social service agencies to promote the health, safety and welfare of students.
- Develop positive relationships with students, staff, and parents through regular interaction and by being highly visible inside and outside of the school.
- Participate in school events and activities to build rapport with students, staff and parents.
- Conduct presentations and/or programs for students and staff that reinforce crime prevention strategies and student safety.
- Collaborate with school and district administration to develop safety plans and emergency response procedures.
- Provide security at school board meetings and out of town athletic events.
- Maintain timely and accurate records and reports.
- Monitor school security cameras.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and information (FERPA).
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal/Deputy Superintendent.
Qualifications
- Commissioned law enforcement officer
- Minimum of three years experience in law enforcement
- Ability and desire to work with students
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Proven ability to de-escalate tense situations and respond appropriately to emergencies
- Clean background check
Physical Requirements
- Be able to stand/sit for the majority of the school day
- Be able to lean, reach, bend, lift and squat as needed
- Be able to walk on uneven surfaces
- Be able to walk up and down stairs as needed
- Be outside in all weather conditions
- In district travel and out of district travel

Salary : $38,069 - $46,235
