About Us

At Tavus, we're building the human layer of AI. Our mission is to make human-AI interaction as natural as face-to-face interaction, enabling the human touch where it has been previously unscalable. We achieve this through pioneering research in multi-modal AI models for human perception and understanding, combined with state-of-the-art human avatar rendering and communication models. We're a Series A company backed by top investors, including Sequoia, Y Combinator, and Scale VC. Join us in driving the future of human-AI interaction. Check it out for yourself 😎

Your Mission

In partnership with our team and external vendors, you will architect and manage the end‑to‑end process for how we record content for our digital humans. That includes defining visual direction, casting actors, selecting locations, managing lighting & styling, directing performance capture setups, and delivering cleaned footage for both customer use (like enhancing our portfolio of Digital AI Humans) and internal use (like training our AI models).

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as production lead and creative director for AI human capture shoots, including managing casting, hair/makeup, wardrobe, camera direction, and lighting on set and offsite when working with vendors.
  • Define and iterate on capture protocols (poses, turntables, facial expressions, motion sequences) to satisfy requirements from our researchers and customers.
  • Build and manage vendor partnerships and manage budgets for select professional shoots; develop standardized guides so freelance crews can replicate results reliably.
  • Oversee post‑production, including reviewing and editing audio and video recordings to fit Tavus’s needs.
  • Work cross‑functionally with ML engineers and data teams to ensure captured footage meets model‑training specs (resolution, framerate, emotional range, diversity).
  • Provide creative asset direction and work with team members to plan recording shoots.
  • Establish the asset library and metadata tagging (pose labels, clothing, lighting setups, demographic info) to support both training and product usage.
  • Oversee on‑site hair, makeup, styling, and tech rehearsals, performance capture rigs, and backup filming systems.
  • Track metrics and retrospective insights (shot adequacy, vendor reliability, time per template sub‑shoot, etc.) to continuously improve the process.

Required Qualifications

  • 5 years of professional filmmaking/video production experience, at least 3 years in directing, casting, story‑first, or industrial shoots (e.g. commercial, documentary, branded content, virtual production).
  • Demonstrated success with lighting, hair/makeup, wardrobe and styling coordination for filming environments.
  • Hands‑on experience in footage editing.
  • Strong visual sensibility; ability to translate creative vision into clear direction and high‑quality output.
  • Comfortable working independently, owning the process end‑to‑end as the first specialized hire in this space.
  • Experience managing vendors and part‑time crew; excellent communication skills to scale consistency.
  • San Francisco‑based or immediately able to relocate; ability to travel regionally (~once/month) for shoots.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience specifically in facial capture.
  • Understanding of AI training pipelines: editorial demands - such as facial angles, motion smoothness, lighting stability - for generative or performance models.
  • Experience with multicultural casting and styling for model representation and diverse AI human template design.
