What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sr. Application Engineer position at Tegra Medical?
Job Summary
Responsible for being a strategic leader during the evaluation and determination of the cost structure for manufacturing for new and legacy medical device projects. This role requires deep technical expertise and cross-functional collaboration to define optimal manufacturing sequences, assess production feasibility, and provide insight-driven recommendations that shape new product introduction and scaling strategies.
As a key technical advisor, the Sr. Application Engineer will support Tegra Medicals commitment to excellence by delivering high-level Design for Manufacturability (DFM) guidance, leading cost modeling efforts, and acting as a critical link between customers, engineering, sales, and production. This position plays a pivotal role from early quoting through full-scale manufacturing implementation, ensuring technical and financial alignment across the organization.
Role and Responsibilities
- Lead complex quoting initiatives by reviewing RFQs and detailed engineering drawings to determine feasibility, optimal manufacturing methods, and cost efficiency.
- Provide strategic DFM consultation to internal and external stakeholders; proactively identify opportunities for product or process modifications to enhance manufacturability, reduce cost, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Assist in the evaluation of capital expenditure (CAPEX) for complex projects involving specialized capital investments.
- Create CAD solid models and/or drawings for internal use or DFM inputs as needed.
- Act as a subject matter expert on advanced manufacturing processes, materials selection, and external service integration for medical device production.
- Develop and validate detailed cost models including Bill of Materials (BOM creation), labor/time estimates, and outsourced service costs. Interface with key suppliers and partners to ensure accurate external quoting.
- Collaborate with SME's, engineering, production, supply chain, sales, and quality teams to gather input and build robust, risk-mitigated cost proposals.
- Generate costing operation routing with setup and cycle times; consult with Scheduling on lead time if necessary.
- As an output of the quoting effort, provide competitive manufacturing cost and lead time, as well as notes to communicate technical clarifications, assumptions, or exceptions.
- Send costing estimates to Sales for review, quote generation and submittal to customer in a timely manner.
- Lead technical reviews with customers and internal teams to ensure clarity around quote assumptions, timelines, and transition to production.
- Play a key role in transitioning projects from quoting to production, ensuring alignment with cost targets and operational readiness
- Drive continuous improvement in the quoting process through data analysis, process standardization, and knowledge sharing.
- Mentor and support other Application Engineers, contributing to skill development and consistency in quoting best practices.
- Ensure cost integrity through project lifecycle, aligning initial estimates with downstream process capabilities and financial targets.
- Contribute and lead initiatives aimed at enhancing the quotation process, with a focus on optimizing material, process, and lead time databases.
