Job Purpose

The Educational Liaison works with children with hearing loss and their families by building and maintaining positive relationships with educators and other professionals to ensure positive educational outcomes. The Educational Liaison is also a member of the cochlear implant team at Texas Hearing Institute and collaborates with outside professionals to provide updates to the team pre and post implant.

Major Responsibilities

  • Provides educational support for current and former THI clients and MWS students and their families
  • Coordinates care and services with other THI professionals
  • Coordinate and facilitate various client engagement activities for THI families

Work Activities

Educational Liaison

  • Supports families in requesting a full and individual evaluation (FIE) with their local public school
  • Collaborates with RDSPD staff to coordinate the FIE process for clinic patients and Melinda Webb School students
  • Collaborates with THI Audiologists, SLPs, and social workers; facilitates communication with outside professionals to ensure positive educational outcomes for THI clients.
  • Conducts assessments, observations, and evaluations in school settings, as needed
  • Educates parents, educators, and professionals on hearing loss, speech and language development, and assistive technologies.
  • Supports the development of IEP goals, 504 plans, and other educational services.
  • Shares educational data at THI Cochlear Implant Team meetings and coordinates with ECI providers for CI evaluations.
  • Provides families with referrals within Texas Hearing Institute and to outside community resources, as needed
  • Collaborates with deaf and hard of hearing district leaders across the greater Houston area to build relationships and facilitate collaboration.
  • Act as Client Engagement Coordinator, by developing, coordinating and facilitating various client engagement activities such as: Buddies at Texas Hearing, MWS coffee chats, parent education and support groups, Family Resource Fair, Project LEAD and Project Talk, etc.
  • Attend and represent THI at community events and outreach activities, promoting awareness and building relationships with local stakeholders, including schools, community organizations, and professional networks.

Family Services:

  • Attends leadership meetings, provides updates, and manages the Family Services budget.
  • Provides input for outreach materials and publications regarding Family Services

Education And Experience Requirements

  • Master’s Level degree in Deaf Education, Communication Disorders, or related field
  • 3 years’ teaching or clinical experience
  • An understanding of child development, oral deaf education, speech-language pathology, and audiology
  • Philosophical agreement with and commitment to the mission of THI

Basic Competencies

Excellent oral and written use of English language, comprehensive understanding of child and language development and hearing technologies, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office and Teams, Internet, Medical Software
